DEFINING SUBSTANCE ABUSE

• Long-term, pathological use of alcohol or


drugs, characterized by daily intoxication,
inability to reduce consumption, and
impairment in social or occupational
functioning; broadly, alcohol or drug
addiction.

• Developing a tolerance, and needing more
and more as time goes on
• Maintaining constant supply of the drug
• Spending money, even if you can’t afford it

• Recognizing that it is a problem, but
continuing anyways
• Uncharacterized behavior (stealing, etc)
• Risk taking behavior (driving, crime, sexually
promiscuous)
• Failing to quit
• Going through withdrawal symptoms when
you don’t have it.

• At risk for anxiety and depression
• Experimenting with alcohol/drugs at an earlier
age
• Greater chance of becoming an addict themselves

HOW EDUC ATORS C AN • Recognize the issue, and understand Fight,
HELP Flight and Freeze
• Your student may not be able to help their
behaviors because their brain is in survival mode,
understand these warning signs
• Create a stable environment with routine
• Your student more than likely has a very unstable
home, so by creating a routine you can help put
them at ease and make the classroom a safe place
• Develop a strong relationship with all of
your students so they feel comfortable
enough to come to you with problems
• Practice Mindfulness to help your student
develop a tool box of coping skills
• Show them that they matter
• Help get them the resources they need
within your power
