‡ Water is undoubtedly the

most precious natural
resource that exists on our
planet.
‡ Water covers over 70% of
the Earth's surface.
‡ Only a small fraction
(about 3%) is fresh water.
|

‡ Two types of water resources:

1. Surface water :
‡ oceans
‡ rivers
‡ lakes

2. Groundwater
These are the two types of water resources that
pollution affects

‡ When it is unfit for its
intended use, water is
considered polluted.
Ö

‡ Most water pollution doesn't begin in the water

itself.

‡ Take the oceans: around 80 percent of ocean

pollution enters our seas from the land.

‡ Water pollution has many different causes and this

is one of the reasons why it is such a difficult
problem to solve.
ã
‡ With over 8 billion people on the planet, disposing
of sewage waste is a major problem.
‡ 90 percent of sewage is water.

‡ Chemical fertilizers used by farmers also add
nutrients to the soil, which drain into rivers and seas
causing pollution.

‡ Waste water means chemicals washed down drains
and discharged from factories.

‡ heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and mercury.
V
‡ At high enough concentrations it can kill; in lower
concentrations it can cause cancers and other
illnesses.

‡ Heavy metals are toxic to marine life.
‡ Heavy metals can slow development; result in
birth defects and some are carcinogenic.
‡ immune suppression, reproductive failure or acute
poisoning.
‡ diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever
‡ increase in aerobic algae and depletes oxygen
from the water column.
‡ Causes acid rains.

‡ There are three different things that can help to

tackle the problem:
1. Education
2. laws and
3. Economics
and they work together as a team.
‡ Making people aware of the problem
‡ Greater public awareness can make a positive
difference.
‡ Conserve water by turning off the tap
‡ Don't throw paints, oils or other forms of litter
down the drain.
‡ Use environmentally household products
‡ Take care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers.
