Participatory Methodologies

and New Media Education

Research
Inquiry in Action : Chapter 15

Kelsi Brosnahan
Summary

New media has changed the way that people interact and learn.
This chapter is about how studying learning in, with, and
through new media is reshaping the roles of researcher,
subject, and knowledge. There are twos studies that are used
to illustrate the variety of approaches to researching new
media practices, and teaching and learning in art education.
These studies are built on design-based research and
participatory methodologies.
Research problem and questions

How a design-based research methodology was used in designing

a curriculum for learning artistic inquiry online.

Question

How does online learning change the roles of the teacher and
the student?

These evolved over time as the participants contributed their

own knowledge and interactions with the designed curriculum
and each others artistic productions.
Literature review

There are several relevant up to date resources that are

mentioned throughout this chapter.

This research even gained support financially through a

Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Grant.
Data Sources

Gulf Island Film and Television School

The mentor (teachers) and participants (students) through

this program were studied.

Online participants.
Methodology and Procedures

With a short history new media research draws from

traditional methodologies.

Primary methodology was data based research (DBR)

● process bound,interventionist, collaborative, utility-

oriented, and theory driven.
Results

The results are still unclear with new media the only
constant is the evolving nature of the phenomenon. We need to
be able to adapt and adjust research methodologies to help
gain a greater understanding of how new media can change the
roles of the teacher and student.
Discussion

This research is such a board topic it is hard to get a grasp

on where to start. The chapter discussed all of the problems
with conducting online research and made valid concerns.

This research has shown that new media is very much

participatory and can only be categorized through a
qualitative methodology.
