Goals:
By the end of the lesson, students will have an understanding of
what the Civil Rights Movement was and the influential people
involved in it.
Objectives:
Content/Knowledge:
Students will be able to:
1.Explain what the Civil Rights Movement did for the United States.
2.Compare different people that were involved with the movement.
Process/Skills:
Through the activities the students will understand and identify key
individuals as well as important movements and dates.

Rationale:
It is important for students to learn about the Civil Rights
Movement because it shaped the United States. Understanding that
Americans had to ask other Americans for equal justice just
because the color of their skin was different. Learning about this
will allow students to understand what it means to be an American
citizen.

Standards:
State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards
SS.H.2.3: Describe how significant people, events, and
developments have shaped their own community and region.
SS.H.1.3: Create and use a chronological sequence of events.

National – NCSS Themes


Culture, Time, Continuity and change, Individuals, groups, civic
ideals and practices.
Objective
Objective
•Each table group of students (4/group) will receive a name of
someone who was key in the Civil Rights Movement.
•Once they receive the name, they will be doing research on
that person (seeing what role they played, if they got in
trouble, etc.)
•After all of the research is done, each group will make a
PowerPoint or Prezi in order to present the information to the
rest of the class.

•The students will be writing a letter to the Little Rock 9.
•In the letter the students will need to include how they feel,
how proud they are, etc.
•Each student will need to write 3 feelings towards the Little
Rock Nine.

•Students will be working in partners to complete a tree
map.
•The tree map will be about the Bus Boycott.
•Each pair will need to fill out the positives of the Bus
Boycott.

•The class will be divided in half. One side will be against
segregation and the other side will be for it.
•Each side will have ample time to prepare their points of
view in order to debate.
•Each side will have one spokesperson who will discuss
everyone’s point of view.
•The debate will go back and forth until a consensus is
reached.

•Students will be working in pairs to create a rap or hip-hop


dance about the Civil Rights Movement.
•Students will need to include 8-10 important facts when
creating one of these.

1. Students will be identifying the goals of the Civil Rights Movement
however they want to (ex: Prezi, Picture Collage, Newspaper articles,
etc).
