“Quotation Marks”
- Set of marks used in specific writing situations

Three types of Quotations

1. Quotation marks
2. Ellipses
3. Brackets
How to use Quotation Marks correctly
1. Must have an opening and closing
2. Capitalization is necessary when quoting complete
sentences
3. Punctuation marks that introduce the quote are never
placed within quotation marks
4. Commas and periods always go inside the quotation marks;
colons, semicolons and dashes go outside
5. Use single quotation marks for quotes within quotes
Run-in Quotations
-Most common way to use a run-in quotation is to link the
source’s name with a verb or phrase followed by a comma.

Example: John Green said, “I insist that you put cat food in
my bowl at exactly 6:00 p.m.”
Block quotation
- Direct quotation that is not placed inside quotation
marks but instead is set from the rest of the text by
starting on a new line(intendent)

Example:
Direct quotes
- Most commonly used direct quotes are used when directly
quoting things people have said.
- The words that the person said must be inside the quotation marks

Example:

- “That was totally wicked!” the boy screamed.

Indirect Quotes
- Indirect quotes are used when paraphrasing someone’s
words
- Unlike direct quotes indirect quotes are not placed in quotation
marks.

Example:

- After the smoke cleared, the boy yelled how totally wicked they were.
‘Quotes’ within “quotes”
-In order to quote a quote use the double quotation marks
on the outside quote and the single quotes for the inside
quote.
