Mid-Term Evaluation (16th Week), Batch: 20 -
Manufacturing Engineering Project (IM-409) 1
Department of Industrial & Manufacturing (IMD), NED UET
Introduction:
Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering has many CNC
machines to be proud of but this has been felt for a long time that there must
be some machine that replace the traditional way of machining and has some
new non-traditional method of machining.
Under this vision a project of development of a laser based CNC machine
been proposed by the department to meet the new challenges that a modern
industry is facing. The reason why laser is only used as a NTM tool is because
Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials by directing the
output of a high-power laser by computer at the material to be cut and
enables to cut complex shapes at a similar or faster speed than other cutting
methods.
Work piece can be metal as well as non-metal but in this project due to
limited resources we are focusing over non-metal especially Acrylic. This will
be a milestone towards NTM for the upcoming future CNC mechanism based
projects.

Project Title 3
Project Scope:
INCLUDED:

 CNC machine having laser as a cutting tool in operational

condition.
 Non-metal (Acrylic) cutting with 60W tube
 CNC electronic components

NOT INCLUDED:

 Metal cutting
 Structural design
 Mechanical components

Project Title 4
Aim & Objectives:
Development of a laser based manufacturing system is the first time
project in IMD to cut materials in desired shape and required quantity. :

 To develop a CNC machine based on non-traditional machining

(NTM) i.e. the cutting tool is not in contact with the work piece
during cutting.
 To increase the production rate.
 To reduce the wastage of material during machining in the form of
chips.
 Good surface finish without extra machining which lead to reduce
machining cost and cycle time.

Project Title 5
Methodology:

 LASER principle

 CNC mechanism

 CAD software (Pro-E)

 Control software (Mech3)

Project Title 6
Calculations/Contributions of your work:
ITEMS QUANTITY SPECIFICATION COST (PKR)

Laser tube 1 60 watt 30,000

Mirror 3 25 mm 5,300

Lens 1 20 mm 3,830

Power supply 1 60 watt 16,500

Laser mount 1 STD 3,300

Mirror mount 3 STD 9,000

Stepper motor 3 15,000

Controller 1 42,500

Drive 2 24,000
Calculations/Contributions of your work
