Sharing Economy

cheaper version. If we're working together
we're probably more likely to buy a better
quality tool. A little more expensive"

Responsible?
• #AirBnbWhileBlack
• Harvard study:
– requests from guests with distinctively African-American
names are roughly 16% less likely to be accepted than
identical guests with distinctively White names
– difference persists whether the host is African-
American or White, male or female
– difference also persists whether the host shares the
property with the guest or not, and whether the
property is cheap or expensive
– discrimination is costly for hosts who indulge in it:
hosts who reject African-American guests are able to find
a replacement guest only 35% of the time
• Competitors founded such as NoirBnB
• Is AirBnB responsible? (same for Uber, etc.)
• What actions would you recommend for AirBnB?
Edelman, B., Luca, M., & Svirsky, D. (2017). Racial discrimination in the sharing economy: Evidence from a field 13
experiment. American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, 9(2), 1-22.
