PBS for Form 1 2012
FAQ

B. Students’
A. Building C. Teaching &
level of
Instruments Learning
achievements

D. Testing E. Using the

students online system
A. Who build the instruments?
• Teachers within the school will have to come
together to build the instruments.
• Use the samples we share within these 3 days
as a guide.
• Please ensure the quality to gauge your
student’s level of proficiency, just as you
would to build test papers.
A. Where do we get the budget for
making copies of the instruments?
• Consult your Head of Panel and/or PK 1
• Next year, ensure the budget is included.
A. Can teachers build different
instruments to test the different levels
of students, ie: Challenging ones for
the Highly Proficient and easier tasks
for the Weak?
• No. The same instruments will have to be
used for all classes of Form 1 in your school.
• It is an unfair assessment and is not the
practice for any kind of exams / tests.
Cont’d: Differential assessment
• However, teachers may build according to
Jadual Specifikasi Item 5:3:2 which means 50
% of easy questions , 30 % of moderate
questions and 20% of difficult questions.
• Teachers may also build more than one
instrument to confirm that sts belong to a
specific band for that certain skills. If so, trs
will have to carry out all assessment built.
A. Can we use MBBI materials?
• Yes. Your source should be varied.
B. Can a student achieve Band 3 in
Reading / Listening&Speaking but lags
in Band 2 for Writing?

• Yes. Student may have different level of

abilities across the different skills.
• However, within a skill, student MUST achieve
the bands in sequence and not skip forward.
– Eg: If a student is having difficulties to achieve
Band 2 Lisan, s/he may not skip and do Band 3
Lisan.
C. What to teach?
• Teach as you would as per usual (unless you are exam-
oriented – you can stop that now)
• Continue to use your HSP and Scheme of Work until
told not to do so OR until KSSM is announced.
• So, ensure students still learn about writing the many
types of essay (even though some types like report and
letters are not tested in PBS). The same goes for
Summarizing text (the focus is reading skills anyway),
Grammar, Phrasal Verbs, Idioms and knowing the
Graphic materials.
• Focus on what skills these kids need for the real life,
not how to answer PMR paper.
D. When do we start assessing
students using PBS?
• A.S.A.P
• Conduct in-house training for your colleagues
and get the panel to agree on the instruments
that fit your students.
D. Is there a book or module we can
use, specifically tailored for PBS?
• Some books are apparently already in the
market.
• You can watch out for the flood of modules/
workbook in bookstores in the near future.
• BUT, just as you would when building test
papers for your internal exams, BE SMART not
to use the materials wholly. Kids and parents
buy from bookstores too =)
D. What if some assessment is only
partially achieved?
• Some assessments have different parts of what it
requires a student to do. Some students are able to do
a few questions but fall short on some others.
• It is up to the teacher to decide whether the student’s
achievement is satisfactory to that Band or not. Even in
regular tests we put a students’ achievement into
categories: minor errors, gross mistakes, satisfactory,
pass or fail.
• If the task is in numbers, students should achieve at
least half.
• If it is a writing, use the PMR essay marking scheme to
guide you.
D. What if we do not finish carrying
out all 27 instruments?
• We would die standing trying to finish.
• So, it is ok if we do not finish it.
• Next year, the assessments differ for Form 2
so no need to carry out what is left of the
unfinished Form 1 assessments.
• But, to be fair to the deserving ones, try to
assess him/her up to Band 6.
D. How many files do we have and
what are the contents?
• 2 FILES
– FAIL PERKEMBANGAN MURID
• Keep the latest evidences.
• Keep the best done by the student also.
– BUT for this first year, keep all the evidences elsewhere.
– FAIL ‘SHOWCASE’
• Keep the best evidences for every skill.
• Highest band for every skill.
• Decide within your panel, whose student(s) are better
than the rest in terms of the evidence produced.
D. Is there any other file?
• One, kept by S/U PBS:
• Fail Induk PBS
1. Surat Pekeliling Ikhtisas PBS dari Lembaga Peperiksaan
2. Surat Siaran Perlaksanaan PBS dari JPN
3. Senarai nama Jawatankuasa PBS
4. Carta organisasi JK PBS
5. Senarai tugas JK PBS
6. Jadual Kerja /Pengoperasian PBS
7. Minit Mesyuarat JK PBS
8. Keputusan Mesyuarat dilaksanakan / Tindakan susulan
D. What is so important about PBS
meeting at school level?
• Any decision about management of files and
evidences MUST be minuted.
– Eg: Contents in FPM and Show case file differs from
school to school: either the best of each band or the
best of each skill or the best of each class.
• Decision also includes certain time frame a school
/ panel decides on to ensure assessment is done
effectively.
• Any other decisions regarding assessment,
instruments, budget, filing, teachers (pentaksir
kelas) etc are important to be documented.
D. How about Special Students in
Pendidikan Khas?
• They are under a different umbrella.
• They are not assessed using the regular PBS
(until further notice)
E. Can we change students’
achievement for an assessment in the
SPPBS (the online system)?
• No.
• No wrong key-in. (No “oops!)
• Can only ‘Batal’ and ‘Daftar semula’
• Hence, keeping the Rekod Transit SPPBS
(score sheet in hard copy) is very important.
E. When can we get access to the
online system (SPPBS)?
• Apparently September…or sooner.
• So, keep our records using a hardcopy of the
score sheet.
• Keep the evidences in the FPM and Showcase
File accordingly.
E. For students who are expelled, and
have their data deleted from SPPBS,
are the data deleted lost forever?
What if the students come back?
• We have yet to see the system. Let the SU
Peperiksaan deal with it. Keep the data on
score sheet until the student’s cohort finishes
it’s term.
– Ie: For Form One this year, known as Cohort one,
their cohort term is 2012 until 2014. So only
AFTER every cohort finishes Form 3, the data is
obsolete.
