2018-05-05 Prepared By: Lesson:# Unit: # 14

Let’s find the difference between the
two sentences
• Scientists approve drugs Drugs are approved by scientists

Subje Objec Subje

Verb Verb Objec
ct t ct t

2018-05-05 Prepared By: Lesson:# Unit: # 15

The differences are:
When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the
following:

 The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive
sentence

 The finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)

 The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive
sentence (or is dropped)

2018-05-05 Prepared By: Lesson:# Unit: # 16

When to use the passive voice:
Although active voice is generally preferred in academic writing,
passive voice is acceptable under certain conditions:

• To emphasize the receiver of the action instead of the doer

Ex: Grades for all students are averaged.

• When we do not know who performed the action:

Ex: Ray's calculator was made in Germany.

• When we do not wish to mention the doer of the action:

Ex: Many problems have been ignored for too long.

2018-05-05 Prepared By: Lesson:# Unit: # 17

When to use the passive voice:
• When we want to sound objective or avoid using the subject “I”
Ex: Studies have shown . . .
Ex: It is well-known . .

• To keep the focus on the same subject through several sentences or

paragraphs
Ex: My sister and I grew up and went to school in Jamaica. We were
educated according to the British system. In 1997 we were given
the opportunity to come to the United States. We decided to finish
high school before leaving our own country. We were concerned
that the education in this country might not be as good as the one
we had there, and we wanted to improve our English too.
