Role of Geospatial Technologies in Roads and Highways

Public Works Department , Government of Manipur

Background
• PWD is a government department for creating permanent assets of the nation and
the State such as Roads and Buildings. These are based on national standards which
engineers specify and are constructed through contractors. It establishes the rates
for cost of construction which is the basis for construction throughout the state and
is brought out in the Manipur Schedule of rates from time to time. PWD Manipur
is administered according to the CPWD norms.

• The creation of massive highway assets with more than 20,000 km of road length
in last few years, has led to the challenging requirement of Timely and Effective
Monitoring of roads and highways , Maintenance of quality and Efficiency of these
Highways.
● Information and Communication Road Network:
Technology equipped with cutting National Highways: 1459.995 Km
edge Space and Geospatial State Highways: 941.74 Km
technologies in association with latest Major District Roads: 769.09 Km
gadgets like GPS enabled cameras and Rural and Other Roads: 17685.15 Km
GPS enabled video logging, sensor Total Length : 21000 Km(Approx)

Conclusions
● Implementation of geospatial tools maximize the efficiency of decision making and
planning.

● Provide efficient means for data distribution and handling, eradication of the duplicated
data, integration of information from many sources, analysis of queries involving
geographical reference data for generation of new information, update data quickly and
at the minimum cost

● It is recommended that transportation agencies should take the advantage of spatial,

analytical and cartographic capabilities of GIS in their application programs.
