WRECK

 This is defined as including


 JETSAM,
 FLOATSAM,
 LAGAN and
 DERELICT
 found in or on the shores of the sea or any tidal
water.
 Jetsam –
 goods thrown or lost overboard from a ship,
 which are recoverable through

 being eventually washed ashore, or

 remaining submerged in relatively shallow


water.
 Flotsam –
 goods lost or thrown overboard which are
recoverable by reason of their remaining afloat
 Lagan –
 goods thrown overboard and buoyed so that
they can be recovered
 Derelict –
 a vessel remaining afloat but abandoned
FINDER OF WRECK
 If you are the owner of a wreck you must notify the
RECEIVER OF WRECK in that district.
 He is an official appointed by the DTp (who have
overall responsibility for wrecks) and
 is usually a Customs Officer,
 Coastguard officer or
 Inland Revenue Official.
 If you are not the owner, you must deliver the
wreck to the Receiver of Wrecks.
 Failure to do this will cost you a fine,

 forfeiture to any salvage claim, and

 you will also be liable for a certain sum of the


value of the wreck.
 All reports of wreck must be made to a
Receiver of Wrecks and these will be posted in
the local Customs House,
 with its description,

 value and

 location.
 If the value is over a certain sum a copy will be
sent to Lloyds.
 Wreck is usually kept for 12 months before it is
disposed of.
RECEIVER OF WRECKS
 He has certain powers :
 He may take command of any wreck situation
and direct all the persons involved;
 (he will not interfere with the Master’s
operational role unless requested to do so).
 He can requisition transport and enlist the help
of nearby vessels.
 He can cross property in order to gain access to
the coast.
 “He may cause plunderers to be apprehended”

 If anyone gets hurt or even killed while resisting


arrest, he will not be liable.
PROCEEDS OF WRECK
 Monies raised from the sale of wreck is paid
into the National Treasury – the Exchequer.
 Proceeds are treated in the same ways as any
other imported goods and are subject to the
same import taxes.
