Ceiling

• Ceiling of any room is the under side of roof slab

• It gives elegance for the interiors of room, besides

reducing radiation of heat from terrace.

• This is also known as false ceiling

Functions of Ceiling

• To provide decorative finish to the under side of a roof

• To conceal projections such as beams

• To conceal irregularities of sloping roof

• To cover fixtures , service ducts , electrical wirings etc

• To provide insulation against heat or cold

• To provide special acoustic effect

Requirement of Ceiling material

• Shall be homogenous and stable in structure

• Exposed surface shall have desired texture

• Edges shall be regular and smooth for ceiling boards

• Shall have rigidity and structural strength

Requirements of ceiling material

• Shall be resistant to rats, termites, white ants, etc.

• Shall be easy to construct, repair, maintain and clean

• Shall under go tests for thermal, Insulation, acoustic and


fire resistance

Types of Ceilings

Based on method of construction, Ceilings can be of

• Suspended Type and

• Fixed type

Suspended ceiling
A ceiling attached to a frame work suspended from
the main structure

Fixed ceiling

The ceiling material shall be fixed to a frame work of


battens attached to the under side of the main structure

Parts of ceiling

• Frame work made of wood or metal

• Insulating boards such as thermo Cole

• Hard board, soft boards, plywood, strawboard, Fibre


board

• A.C plain sheets

• Plaster of Paris

• Fiber glass.

• Gypsum boards, etc..
Frame work for ceiling
The Frame work consists of
• Aluminum tees and angles (or) Suitable wooden frames
Secured to the under side of the roof

• In case of suspended ceilings, hangers shall be of


adjustable type

• The laying of panels shall start from one corner of frame


work

• Last panel shall not be secured to facilitate inspection


and repairs.

Types of ceilings

Plaster board ceiling

Consists of

• Gypsum Plaster formed in sheets of 2.5m x 0.75m

• Compressed to give strength

• Cover with thick paper

Fixing

• Plaster board is fixed To the under side of

timber joists with flat headed nails joints

covered with hessian scrim finished with 3

mm thick scrim plaster.

• Scrim prevents cracking of joints

Fibre board ceiling

• It is a softer ceiling board.

• It is extensively used where sound insulation and

thermal insulation are required, particularly in

Auditoriums and AC halls.

Fibre board ceiling

• Size of sheets : 0.6 m X 6.00m.

• These sheets are fixed to the timber frame work.

• The joints are covered with timber battens or the

edges of boards splayed to a V joint.

Plywood ceiling

• This ceiling is used in ordinary buildings and shops.


• For fixing to ceiling, wooden frame work is constructed
under the roof
• ply wood sheets are nailed over the frame work
• Wooden or aluminum strips are used to fix at the joints
to
hide
• Painted in decorative colors

Fibre board ceiling
Used where :

• Sound absorption is required

• Thermal insulation is required

Fixing

• Fibre board sheets of Size 0.6mX 0.6m with 12 mm


thick are used

• Fixed to the timber frame work with 30 mm panel pins

• Joint covered with timber battens

• Surface distempered

Ceiling with plaster of paris or gypsum

Fixing Part (A)

• Main battens are fixed to the roof with iron straps

• Cross battens are fixed at right angle to the main battens

• Supported by strap hangers fixed to the slab

Fixing Part (B)

• Wooden strips are fixed to the cross battens in parallel

rows

• Fixed by butt joints

• Joints should be staggered

Fixing of rabbit wire mesh

• The mesh is fixed with the nails to the wooden strips

Fixing Part (D)

Application of plaster of paris


• Plaster of paris is mixed with water
• Applied to the under side of rabbit mesh in suitable sized
panels
• Finished by steel trowels
• Surface shall be given a decorative finish
• Thickness shall not be less than 12 mm
