What is Realistic Job Preview (RJP)?
Realistic job previews is a process during recruitment of an employee which clearly
highlights all the pros and cons related to the job profile.

A Realistic Job Preview provides the following:

Work hours
Pay
Job related tasks
Work culture
Degree of physical risk
Related pressure
Schedule flexibility
Degree of customer interaction
Priority associated to job
Steps of RJP
Advantages of Realistic Job Preview
• For the employees:

 Reduced stress

 Taking an informed decision

 Increase in job satisfaction

• For the employers:

 Better hiring decisions

 Increase in corporate citizenship behavior

Disadvantages of Realistic Job Preview

 Negative attitude towards a job

 The nature of work changes with time.

 Updating the previews may be time consuming as well as

costly
Background
 Weitz and Nuckols (1955) provided the first evidence that employees can
possess unrealistic expectation.
 Weitz (1956) tested the hypothesis that giving a more accurate job description
will lead to a reduction in employee turnover.
 In the 1960s only two studies were conducted using Weitz’s “realistic job
concept”
 The 1970s saw a noticeable increase in attention and research in this realm
 The findings in support of the organizational benefits of RJPs led to a surge of
research in the 1980s and 1990s.
 The impacts of realistic job previews are yet to be explored in fields such as
internship, temporary workers or the use of probationary hire periods.
Literature Review
• Impact on Turnover: RJP will result in employees having
greater job satisfaction, and consequently lower
turnover.

• Impact on Job Acceptance: designed RJP would have

the desired effect of causing some job applicants to
reconsider their career choices and withdraw from the
application process.

• Impact on Post-Employment Job Satisfaction: RJP helps

new employees cope with the demands of the new job
by better preparing them for what to expect.
In creating a RJP, there are many
factors to consider, including
• How the RJP will be created (e.g., structured
observations, meetings with current employees)
• How the RJP will be distributed (e.g., written
material, video, interview)
• How to present both positive and negative aspects
of the job (e.g., always follow a negative item with
a positive item)
• When to introduce the RJP (i.e., early or late in the
recruiting process)
Objectives of the study:
To learn about the concept of ‘Realistic Job Preview’.
To find out if it is used in the local steel industry.
If it is used, what is the procedure and how it affects the recruiting procedure.
If RJP is not used, what are the reasons behind the decision

Scope of the study:

Not possible to cover the whole industry
Resources were insufficient.

Limitations:
The concept is not common in our country.
The nature of information shared is unclear.
Only six organizations have been chosen from the industry.
