Cement Concrete Block Masonry
Use of C.C. block masonry construction has developed
rapidly due to the following advantages

• Large sige & uniformity in design

• Appearance
• Strength
• Economical
• Ease in production
• Steam curing enables quick use of these blocks

9C406.17 9
Types of C.C Blocks

• Regular C.C.Blocks : Precast C.C.Blocks are made

from dense aggregate for
load bearing walls

• Light Weight C.C. blocks: Light weight aggregate is

used. Blocks used for both
load and non load bearing
walls

Recommendations of Concrete Association
of India
• Face thickness of C.C.block not less than 5 cm and net
area should be at least 55 to 60% of gross area
• Minimum number of cores in a block is two
• They must be oval shaped
• Common sizes are

Type Length Breadth Height

size A 39cm 30cm 19cm
size B 39cm 20cm 19cm
Size C 39cm 10cm 19cm
Table-1 9C406.17 12
Manufacture of C.C. Blocks
• Mixture of fine aggregate (60%) and coarse aggregate
6mm to 12 mm size (40%) is used

• Fineness modules of mixture – 2.9 to 3.6

• Concrete mix 1:6

• C.C. block should be on moulding platform for 24hrs

9C406.17 13
Manufacture of C.C. Blocks
• Machine moulding shall be resorted to, for better finish
and strength
• Minimum curing period 7days shall be allowed

• A minimum of drying period of 4 weeks should be

allowed after curing period.
• Improper compaction should be avoided

• The solid / Hallow concrete blocks can be produced for

desired compressive strength.

9C406.17 14
Points to Be observed in C.C. block masonry

• Well dried blocks should be used

• Blocks should not be dipped in water. Only sides shall be

wetted

• Water absorption shall be less than 10% for exterior

walls and 15% for internal walls.

• Mortar should not be stronger than the concrete mix

9C406.17 15
Points to be observed in C.C. block masonry

• Proportion of mortar: 1 : 1 : 10 (cement : lime : sand)

• Joints should not be more than 5mm to 10mm

• Solid blocks or hollow blocks filled with concrete should

be used at junction of wall to avoid cracking
