UNIT 1: Basic Concepts and Issues on Human

Development
NATURE vs. NURTURE
CONTINUITY vs.
DISCONTINUITY
STABILITY vs. CHANGE
The degree of which human behavior is
determined through heredity (NATURE) or
learned through interactions in the environment
(NURTURE).
 NATURE

Behavior is caused by
innate characteristics

Inherited

GENES provides the

blueprint for all
behavior
 NURTURE

Behavior is shaped by
interactions with the
environment

Born an empty vessel

Quality depends on
external influences
Viewed that human development involves
gradual cumulative change from conception to
death (CONTINUITY) and some believe that
developing skill proceeds through a series of
abrupt changes (DISCONTINUITY)
Deals with the issue whether or not personality
traits during infancy endure throughout
lifespan.
 Introvert  Extrovert

Are these naturally personalities will remain until

the rest of their life? Or would be modified
eventually by interactions with family, experiences
at school, and acculturation.
