PROJECT INTRODUCTION

The flash floods, generated in the hill torrents during years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013,
severely devastated the infrastructure and public property in the area. To overcome the
losses due to flash floods, Punjab Irrigation Department procured the Consultancy
services of ACE. As per TOR, the consultants were required to provide the following
services:

i) Review of the available data and previous studies.

ii) Safe disposal of flood water in main streams.

iii) Comprehensive technical and economic evaluation.

iv) Prepare a Hill Torrent Management Plan including cost estimate and
implementation plan.

BAROACH NULLAH
ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED

 Division of flows in the upstream reaches between Baroach and

Adwala nullah near Mallah Khel village to improve distribution

 Checking channel capacity to avoid inundation for design flood

and to propose necessary mitigation measures

 Analysis of alternatives to avoid damages downstream of Mianwali

Bannu Road Bridge to River Indus creek

 Bank protection for a reach immediately upstream of Mianwali

Bannu Road Bridge

7
DEVELOPMENT PLAN

 Flood safety to Baroach area has been provided against the historical
flood of 2010 i.e;10500 cusecs.

 Considering the site and hydrological conditions, it has been designed to

divert 8500 cusec discharge towards Baroach nullah and 2000 cusecs
towards Adwala nullah.

 Channel capacities have been estimated by developing a water surface

profile model utilizing HEC-RAS software.

 Water surface profiles for various discharges up to design discharge of

8500 cusec for Baroach nullah have been prepared. It has been noted
that for the design discharge almost all the locations of Baroach nullah
are safe against inundation except a small portion of 2000 ft near
Meliwal for which a levee has been proposed.

CHICHALI NULLAH
ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED

 To control the water flows during flooding at its point of advent,

for the creeks emerging from Chichali nullah.

 To strengthen the existing flood protection embankment near

Chapri town.

 Checking flow distribution between left and right creek of Chichali

nullah.

 Bank protection for selected reaches.

 Checking channel capacity to avoid inundation for design flood

and to propose necessary mitigation measures.

17
DEVELOPMENT PLAN

 Flood safety to Chichali area has been provided against the historical flood of
2010 i.e;15,700 cusecs.

 Plug bunds need to be provided at two locations i.e. at cunette near RD

11+000, at Adwala nullah branch at RD 17+000.

 Plug bunds have been designed across the waterway in such a way that it
restricts flood flows to sufficiently small amount to avoid downstream
inundation and to allow smaller perennial flows for irrigation purpose.

 Channel capacities have been estimated by developing a water surface profile

model utilizing HEC-RAS software.

18
DEVELOPMENT PLAN

 To protect the Chapri town from the flows of Chichali nullah stone pitching and
toe wall has been designed by considering the velocity of flows during design
flood of 15,700 cusecs. For calculating the size and gradation of stones
guidelines from USACE has been utilized.

 Downstream of Chapri town Chichali nullah splits into two major creeks. For
calculating the share of this creek at various discharges a water surface
profile model has been developed in HEC-RAS environment.

 It has been estimated that about 60 % of the design flood flow towards
Chichali main. So, channel improvement works of the Chichali main nullah
have been designed on 9,420 cusec discharge.

19
DEVELOPMENT PLAN

 To protect the localities from Mithi Khel to Kaliwala from RD 32+644 to RD

37+147 a gabion wall has been designed.

 To protect the localities upstream of Mianwali Bannu Road Bridge at RD

52+420 to RD 53+416 stone pitching has been provided. Stone size has been
calculated based on the velocities obtained through the developed HEC-RAS
Model at design discharge conditions.

 For checking the flow capacity of the four nullahs at design discharge, water
surface profile model has been prepared in HEC-RAS environment by
inserting measured channel cross sections. It has been noticed that all the
localities of Chichali nullah are safe against inundation.
