Biodiesel from jatropha oil

Dr.Alok Gautam Mr. Shivam Pandya

SPONSERED BY BEIL 1
Points Of Last Meeting

• Start Production of Biodiesel with Reactive Distillation Column.

MATERIAL BALANCE

Literature Suggest that 1:6 (oil : methanol) ratio most desirable

for Transesterification.
gm 1 mol
Oil required = 100 ml × 0.92 × = 0.105 mol
ml 868 gm
MeOH required = 0.105 × 6 = 0.691 𝑚𝑜𝑙
Wt of methanol = 0.691 × 32 = 22.11 𝑔𝑚
22.11
Volume of methanol = = 28 ml
0.78
Condition & Parameter For Experiment
𝑚𝑙
Flow rate Oil = 1.6
sec
𝑚𝑙
Flow rate MeOH = 0.466
sec

Residence Time = 10 min

Temperature = 65-70 ℃
Pressure ≈ 1.2 atm
EXPERIMENT SETUP
PROBLEMS DURING PRODUCTION

• Product Coming Out from thermowell Side instead of product

withdrawn side of three-neck round-bottom flask .
• Retrofitting an external storage tank to minimize the deviation in flow.
• Condenser Leakage.(replaced)
• Ratio Control is required.

MeOH Condenser Design

Biodiesel Industrial Scale Production (1000 Litre/day)

• MeOH Condenser.xlsx (to be optimize)

7
FUTURE WORK

• Effective Production of Biodiesel with rectified process equipment and

parameter.
• The 27/3 Test Effective at picking up trace quantities of triglycerides in
finished biodiesel.
• According to ASTM D6571 specification 2.5% triglycerides in the in
perfectly acceptable fuel.
