INTRODUCTION
Wind power turbines come in handy in the market today.vertical
axis wind turbine happens to be one of the most popular and
widely coveted wind turbine.
It is also more practical, reliable and cost effective has the best
longevity and durability features.therefore, you will be able to use
it efficiently over a long haul.
The turbine is also designed in a unique way that enables it to
work efficiently in an urban and suburban area
To generate the electricity with the help of vawt(vertical axis
wind turbine).the vawt is used to generate the dc power.
A vawt does not need to be oriented into the wind direction.the
power transition mechanisms can be mounted at ground level for
easy access.

WIND ENERGY

Wind energy is a converted form of solar energy.

The suns radiation heats different part of the earth at different
rates-most notably during the day and night, but also when
different surfaces (for example, water and land)absorb or reflect at
different rates.
This in turn causes portions of the atmosphere to warm
differently.
Hot air rises, reducing the atmosphere to warm differently.
Hot air rises, reducing the atmospheric pressure at the earths
surface, and cooler air is drawn in to replace it.
The result is wind.
5
CONTD……

The kinetic energy of the wind can be changed into other forms
of energy, either mechanical energy or electrical energy.

The kinetic energy contined in wind can be transferred to other

objects, such as boat sails or transformed into electrical energy
through wind turbine generators.

With recent surge in fossil fuel prices ,demands for cleaner

energy sources, and government funding incentives, wind turbine
are becoming a more viable technology for electrical power
generation.

6
WIND TURBINES

7
HOW WIND TURBINE WORKS?

wind turbine essentially work the same way with minor

modifications depending on size and configuration.

The wind turn the blades to spin a shaft which connects to a

generator which produces electricity.

Essentially the rotor harness the kinetic energy of the wind and
convert it into electrical energy.

8
TYPES OF AXIS
Horizontal turbine

 Higher wind speeds

 Medium efficiency

 Has to be moved into the direction of the wind

 Very high power

 Efficiency-18% to 20%
9
Vertical turbine

 Can place generator on ground

 Wind direction doesn’t matter. It adjust to it its self.

 Medium power

 Efficiency-50% to 60%

10
WHY WE CHOSE A VERTICAL AXIS TURBINE
INSTEAD OF A HORIZONTAL AXIS?

Works at a lower wind speeds.

Wind direction doesn’t matter.
Fewer components
Safety
down
Efficiency
Maintenance

11
VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE

Our project is based on “giro mill” type VAWT.

The turbine starts rotating at 4m/s speed.
VAWTs are rugged,quiet,omni-directional.
VAWT doesn’t create much stress on the support structure.
It can be installed on chimneys and similar tall structures.
Popularizing the wind energy for domestic application.
The generator is mounted on a short tower.
The blades point upward.

PERMANENT MAGNET GENERATOR

DC OUTPUT AND TURN ON LD

13
PROJECT COMPONENTS
PERMANENT MAGNET BRUSHLESS GENERATOR
 Permanent magnet generator is same as that of shunt motor with
with the difference that there is permanent magnet instead of
stationary field winding for producing the required magnetic flux.
 Since this is brushless and commutator is absent it requires
practically no maintainance.
 The life of this type of motor is longer compared to others.
BLADE
 Blade design is made of aluminium and epoxy resin.
 Above materials are used for our blades.
 Aerodynamic blade made of carbon fiber is light weight.has a
razor sharp edge which cut through the wind and make it virtually
silent.
14
FIRST PHASE
(CONCEPTUAL DESIGNING WITH
SOLIDWORKS)

15
MATERIALS
2 bicycle rims22 inch
0.3 galvanized metal sheet (for making the turbine)
1 alternator
Angle iron M.S. (10 feet or 120 inch)-40*2 mm
Angle iron M.S. (15 feet or 180 inch)-20*2mm
Rope belt-length dependent on setup(79”)

16
ENERGY PRODUCTION SPECIFICATION
Rotor size:42.mm D*170mm L.
Operational voltage 12v DC (Connected to battery)
Power rating
10 mph(4.5 m/s)=0.75A*12v=8 watts
20 mph(9.0 m/s)=3.0A*12v=36 watts
30 mph(13.5 m/s)=5A*12v=60 watts

17
PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Considering the input involved in the making of VAWT,it can
be easily constructed and put to use at home.
As we have seen the cost involved in its making,it proves to
be cheaper than tapping any other non conventional sources
of energy, hence proving it to be future of power generation.
The only trouble in its sucessful application across the globe
is ‘constant wind velocity’
So practically speaking, this turbine would efficiently work in
those areas which have constant wind flow,be it any
velocity.intermittent wind flow will reduce its efficiency.

18
CHIEF AREAS WHERE ITS INSTALLATION
AND WORKING WOULD BE EFFICIENT
Costal areas
Deserts
Open fields
Farms
Hilly areas
Polar regions
High stored buildings in cities,etc
As these regions have constant wind velocity almost all
throughout the year,so this turbine work efficiently.

19
ADVANTAGES
Accepts wind from any angle.
Better answer to rapidly changing winds.
Components can be mounted at ground level.
Ease of service.
Lighter weight towers.
Virtually silent operation.
High mechanical stability.

20
DISADVANTAGES

21
CONCLUSION
The project “vertical axis wind turbine” is easy to implement in
normal house hold and industrial application.
From the project it can be concluded that wind turbine have a
large base of application in power production.
Wind power is an untapped resource and it can easily suffice our
power needs in coming future.
From a survey we have concluded that power production using
wind energy is much cheaper at rs.5 per Kwh as compared to
solar energy (above rs.15 per KWh).
So wind energy can be easily regarded as a cheap and efficient
energy source of the future.

22
• Here we have developed a mode which is capable of producing
enough mechanical power required to generate electricity using
alternator.
• This is just the miniature version of turbine which are used for
heavy power generation.
• Our project aims at introducing the new concept of tapping this
wind energy in an easy efficient and unconventional way.
