FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF

A POLYHERBAL FACE WASH GEL

Abstract
Acne is the common disorder occurring due to the
changes in the hormones such as androgens,
corticosteroids. It is mainly caused by the oil glands. Face
and neck are the areas more prone to the acne. Acne
can be prevented by removing oil from the face. It can be
achieved by proper cleaning of the face by pure water.
Face wash prepared by herbal ingredients are better than
the synthetic ingredients to avoid side effects.

The present work was intended to prepare a face wash


with antioxidant, antibacterial and antiseptic properties
which are necessary to keep the skin, smooth and
attractive. Gel was prepared and evaluated for its spread
ability, consistency, grittiness, foamability, pH and the
results were found to be satisfactory.
Introduction

Skin is the major part of the body, which indicates the


health of an individual. It is a composite of materials such
as carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids etc. A balanced
nutrition is required for the skin to keep it healthy, clear and
glossy. Apart from the balanced nutrition, hormonal
changes especially during the puberty in both sexes cause
many changes in the body.
Materials & Method
Ethanolic extract of lemon was obtained from the fruit
which possess the antibacterial and antioxidant property.
Whole part of aloe vera was used to prepare the ethanolic
extract which imparts cooling and soothing effect. Bulb
part of cucumber longa used and ethanolic extract was
prepared from it. Other ingredients such as gelling agent
(carbopol 940), preservatives (methyl and propyl),
neutralizer (triethanolamine), foaming agent(Sodium lauryl
sulphate), humectants(propylene glycol), vehicle(water)
(Table 1).
 Preparation of extract
Ethanolic Extracts of lemon, aerial part of Neem, whole plant
of aleo vera, bulb of cucumber longa were prepared by
Maceration Process.

 Preparation of gel
A little quantity of water was added with preservatives,
propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulphate were dissolved
well .To the above solution carbopol was added little by little
and stirred well until a gel like dispersion was obtained .To this
the extracts were added one by one to get a complete gel
like consistency .Then triethanolamine was added finally.
Evaluation

The prepared face wash gel was evaluated for various parameters as follows:
 Colour
 Odour
 Consistency
 pH
 Viscosity
 Spreadability
 Washability
 Grittiness
 Foamability
Results
Conclusion

Skin disease is very common and the need to prevent or


treat the disease is in great demand. In the present
scenario, people need remedy for skin disease without side
effects .Herbal ingredients opened the way to formulate
cosmetics without harmful effect, which can impart the
required properties to heal the skin disease and the
expense will be less when compared with the synthetic
products. This formulation can be used as an effective
face wash gel.
