traction, drum, screw, or rack and
pinion type.

shall not be used for connecting the
drum or sheaves to the main driving
mechanism.

means of access to elevator machine
rooms and overhead machinery spaces
shall be provided for authorized
personnel.
2569.24 SUSPENSION MEANS
• Consists of not less than two wire ropes
• ONLY iron (low-carbon steel) or steel wire ropes having the
commercial classification “ELEVATOR WIRE ROPE” shall be
used for the suspension of counterweights.
• Minimum diameter – shall not be less than 3/8 in. (9.5mm)
• Rope data tag shall be provided that meets the requirements
of subsection 2533.3.
VERTICAL AND RECIPROCATING
CONVEYORS
2570.0 APPLICATION
• Equipped with a platform or carrier
and intended for moving inanimate
objects and/or material only.
DEFINITIONS
• Actuator – a manually operated device that initiates the
action of controls or controllers.
DEFINITIONS
• Antirunaway (Safety Shop) – safety device to STOP and
HOLD the uncontrolled descent of a platform or carrier.
DEFINITIONS
• Backstop – to prevent reversal of a loaded vertical or
inclined reciprocating conveyor under action of gravity
when upward travel is interrupted.
DEFINITIONS
• Bracing – structural members used to
stabilize the supporting structure.

• Brake – a friction device for slowing

down components, bringing conveyor
equipment to a controlled stop,
holding travelling equipment at a
selecting landing, preventing reverse
travel, and controlling overspeed due
to the action of gravity.
DEFINITIONS
• Carrier or Platform – the moving part of a vertical or inclined
reciprocating conveyor that supports the load.

• Control – the system governing the starting, stopping, direction of

motion, acceleration, speed, retardation identification, and function
of the moving member in a predetermined manner.
DEFINITIONS
• Controller – an electromechanical device or assembly of devices
for starting, stopping, accelerating, or decelerating a drive, or
serving to govern in the predetermined manner the power
delivered to the drive.

• Conveyor vertical or inclined – hydraulically or mechanically

powered reciprocating device exclusively designed for moving
freight(not to carry passengers or an operator) vertically or on
an incline between two or more landings and/or between
different levels on a single floor.
• Counterweight – weights in a structural frame used to balance or
impose a load.

• Emergency stop – a stop resulting from a sudden and

unexpected need, and not as part of the normal operation.
• Emergency Stop Switch – a device that must be actuated
in an emergency situation to stop a conveyor.

• Enclosed – describes the guarding of moving parts in such a

manner that physical contact by parts of the body is precluded
as long as the guard remains in place.

• Guard – a covering or barricade to prevent entry into operating

components such a gear, chain, or nip points.
• Guarded – shielded, fenced, enclosed, or otherwise
protected by means of suitable enclosure, covers, casing
shields, troughs, railings, or by nature of location as to
reduce forseeable injury.

• Guarded by Location – describes moving parts so

protected by their remoteness from the floor, platform,
walkway, or other working level, or by their location with
reference to frame, foundation, or structure, as to reduce
the forseeable risk of accidental contact by persons or
objects.
• Nip point – a point at which moving or rotating machinery
components may entrap persons or objects by nipping, pinching,
or squeezing.

Conveyor-related injuries:

• Cleaning or maintaining a
conveyor, especially when it is still
operating.

• Reaching into an in‐going nip point

to remove debris or to free
jammed material.

• A cleaning cloth or clothing gets

caught in the conveyor and pulls
fingers or hands into the conveyor.
Combination of rotating and sliding parts and
reversing parts, creating two
in-running nip point hazards.
(A) Rack and pinion gears. (B) Conveyor belt spool.
SAFETY CONSIDERATION
• ELECTRICAL CODE
• All electrical installations and wiring shall conform to the latest
Philippine Electrical Code and the National Electrical Code.

• CONTROLS
• Shall be remotely installed so as to be inaccessible from the platform
or carrier.
• Shall be kept free of obstruction to permit ready access.

• OPERATION
• All electrical installations and wiring shall conform to the latest
Philippine Electrical Code and the National Electrical Code.
• GUARDING
• Vertical or inclined conveyors
• shall be guarded.
• Shall equipped with doors or gates
• MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE
• shall be performed by qualified and trained personnel.
Screw Type Elevators
This drive system is usually seen on wheelchair lifts.
Escalators
Escalator = Scala Elevator
re-designed by Charles Seeberger in 1897
which is Latin STEPS and the word
“ELEVATOR”

• Escalators in department stores rise at an

angle of between (30°-35°). The 35°
escalator is MORE ECONOMICAL, as it
takes up less surface area.
Escalators

• An escalator is a conveyor type

transport device that moves people.
• the width of the step :
60 cm (for one person width)
80 cm (for one- to two people
width) ; and
100 cm (for two people width)
Arrangement of Escalators
• Handrail shall be a minimum of
4 in. (102 mm) horizontally and
1 in. (25mm) vertically away
from the adjacent surfaces.

ELEVATORS
• use of the elevator shall be restricted to a
physically disabled individual(s) only and
it shall not be used to transport materials
and equipment.
2575.0. Authority Having Jurisdiction
• Shall inspect the elevator, witness a safety
test(s) and issue a permit to operate, prior
to it being into normal service.
Hoistway Enclosure Construction
1. Shall be fully enclosed meeting the requirements of
section 2509.
2. Exterior windows within the hoistway shall be protected
