Introduction

 The Joint Commission is an independent U.S. based organization


that accredit, evaluate, measure, and share best practices in
quality and patient safety with all categories of the nation health
care system. Located in Illinois, it is the largest and most prestigious
organization providing innovative solutions, leadership and
standard-setting services.
Historical overview

 Effort led by Ernest Codman M.D. to promote and reform hospital


performance towards a patient outcome model in response to
appalling conditions that was common in healthcare at the time.
 His groundbreaking work help to establish the American College of
Surgeons(ACS) which developed the first minimum standard for
hospitals in 1919 known as the Hospital Standardization Program
(HSP).
 In 1951 the Joint Commision on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH)
was established as the burden of the HSP became too much for the
ACS.
 In 1965 the organization accreditation role became official. The
federal government decided that a facility had to met JCAH
accreditation to participate in the Medicare program.

 In 1998 it was renamed the Joint Commission on Accreditation of


Healthcare Organization.
 In 2007 it underwent major changes and the name was simplified to
The Joint Commission.
 Joint Commission is responsible for the accreditation of healthcare
facilities in the United states. It is also responsive to other needs of
the healthcare organization including the use of patient safety
measures, the measurement of performance , public policies and
the efficient exchange of information.
 There is also an international arm known as Joint Commission
International (JCI)
TJC & JCI

 JCI provide worldwide accreditation, consultation, publication and


education programs. It assist the international communities to
improve the quality of patient care by engaging healthcare
organizations, public health agencies and ministries of health to
evaluate, improve, and implement quality of care and safety
measures.
 The Joint Commission standards locally and internationally is
aligned with improved patient outcome as it seek to inspire and
improve safe effective care of the highest quality.
Mission and Vision

 The mission of the Joint Commission is to continuously improve


health care for the public, in collaboration with stakeholders , by
evaluating healthcare organizations and inspiring them to excel in
providing safe and effective care of the highest quality.
 The vision is that all people will always experience the safest, quality,
and best value healthcare across all settings.
The Joint Commission Leadership

 The board of commissioners is the governing body for The Joint


Commission.
 It is made up of a thirty two member panel consisting of physician,
nurses, employees, quality experts, a consumer advocate and
educators.
 There are other subcommittes and liaison groups that these
members serve on including the Nursing Advisiory Council.
Literature Review

 An indepth review of the literature determine The Joint Commission


National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) as being significantly
important.
 The Joint Commission established its NPSGs program in 2001
 The first set of NPSGs was effective January 1st 2003.
 The NPSGs were established to help accredited organization
address specific area of concerns in regards to patient safety
 The NPSGs are developed by a panel of experts who advise the
Joint Commission
 The panel is called the Patient Safety Advisiory Group.
 Included are: nurses, physican, pharmacist, risk managers, clinical
engineers and other professtionals who have hansd on experience
in addressing patient safety issues in a wide variety of healthcare
settings.

The Future of the JC

 The future of The Joint Commission is embedded in its mission


statement. Its fundamental goal is to promote continuous
improvement in healthcare quality and patient safety. The Joint
Commission conscious awareness of its patient safety goals
emerged in the 1990s, it expanded to advocating for the patient
safety legislation which was enacted by Congress creating the
Patient Safety Organizations. The Joint Commission and The Joint
Commission International collaborated with the World Health
Organization to initiate a boarder world alliance for patient safety.
Quality and safety is the Joint Commission greatest asset, widely
applauded and commands attention. The statistics show that the
Joint Commission standards relates directly to improved patient
safety and quality
Conclusion

 Through the years the Joint Commission has become a recognized


leader with a distinguish mission-related portfolio including:
accreditation, performance measurements, patient safety,
Information dissemination, and public policy initiative. Its platform
have undergone continuous changes over the last six decades. This
is because the healthcare environment is continuously changing.
The coming years will no doubt see even more evolution in the
healthcare environment and this means that the Joint Commission
will also be a changing organization. However the high quality and
expectation placed on health care quality and patient safety in the
healthcare environment is now a standardized reality.
