Cartoon Network or

Nickelodeon?
Michael Penny
Before we start...
First off: There
are obviously biases with every argument.
However, I ask that you set yours aside and listen to mine for
the duration of this presentation.

Defining terms: In
my evaluation of the channels, I am including all
of the shows that are “related” to the original channel - so for
Cartoon Network, it includes shows on Adult Swim and
Boomerang. For Nickelodeon, it includes shows that appear
on Nick at Night and Nicktoons.
Some Background…
Cartoon Network: launched 25 years ago (October 1, 1992). As of
January, available to 80.7% of households. Related Channels: Adult Swim,
Boomerang, TNT, TBS, CNN, HBO, and Cinemax.

Nickelodeon: launched 39 years ago (December 1, 1977). As of January,

available to 79.01% of households. Related channels: NickatNite, Nick Jr.,
Nicktoons, and TeenNick.
What shows do YOU know/remember
from these channels?
● Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Adult Swim…

● Nickelodeon, NickatNite, Nicktoons…

Time to take a stance...
Viewership of Each Channel...
● In summer of 2015, Cartoon Network was recently named
the #1 ad-supported cable network among children from
ages 6-11.
● Nickelodeon’s viewership was down 34% in Quarter 1 of
2015 alone and are expected to drop even more by the
end of 2017.
Rationale for my Choice:
1. Nostalgia: Cartoon Network appeals to the nostalgic element of
people by keeping them interested with the Boomerang Channel.
2. Newer is Always Better: Cartoon Network had more shows that
appealed to people, and continuously came out with newer ones, too.
3. Continuous Interest: Cartoon Network kept teenagers (who grew up
with their shows) interested with subtly mature shows (Regular Show
and Adventure Time).
4. Speaking of Maturity: Cartoon Network also has Adult Swim, which
captures the audience of the age group most of us are in now with
more mature shows (Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, Eric Andre)
In Conclusion...
● Cartoon Network’s network has many more shows that
have continuously appealed to children around our age.
● Nickelodeon has failed to keep up with Cartoon Network’s
ratings, and has not kept teenagers interested in their
programs.
● Cartoon Network has had many shows at the same time,
and continued to make high-quality shows after their
“Golden Age” (all the shows on Boomerang).
