21st Century Skills

3. Communication and Collaboration
4. Flexibility and Adaptability
5. Initiative and Self-Direction
6. Social and Cross-Cultural Skills
7. Productivity and Accountability
8. Leadership and Responsibility
Habit 1: Be Proactive ®

I am a responsible person. I take

initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes,
and moods. I do not blame others for my
wrong actions. I do the right thing without
being asked, even when no one is
looking.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind®

I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that

have meaning and make a difference. I am
an important part of my classroom and
contribute to my school’s mission and
vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
Habit 3: Put First Things First ®

I spend my time on things that are most

important. This means I say no to things I
know I should not do. I set priorities, make
a schedule, and follow my plan. I am
disciplined and organized.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win ®

I balance courage for getting what I want

with consideration for what others want.
When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win
solution.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand,
Then to Be Understood ®

I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I

try to see things from their viewpoint
(paradigm). I listen to others without
interrupting; I listen with my ears, my eyes,
and my heart. I am confident in voicing my
ideas.
Habit 6: Synergize ®

I value other people’s strengths and learn

from them. I get along well with others;
even people who are different than me. I
work well in groups. I seek out other
people’s ideas because I know that by
teaming with others, we can create better
solutions than what any one of us could
alone. I look for Third Alternatives.
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw ®

I eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep

(body). I learn in lots of ways and lots of
places, not just at school (brain). I spend
time with family and friends (heart). I take
time to find meaningful ways to help people
(soul). I balance all four parts of myself.
Implementing the 7 Habits at Home
Habit 1: Be Proactive

Create Family Goals

On a poster board or a large sheet of paper, create a

family goal sheet that includes four sections. Entitle the
first section, “Health and Fun,” the second section,
“Knowledge,” the third section, “Love and Kindness,” and
the fourth section, “Spirituality.” As a family, come up with
two or three goals for each section.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Make a Family Collage

As a first step to creating a family mission statement,

make a collage of your family ideals and values. Gather
together paint, crayons, photos, magazines, etc. and cut
out pictures or words that represent what you want your
family to stand for. Post it somewhere in your home as a
reminder of your mission.
Habit 3: Put First Things First

Do a Family Member’s Chores

Do a family member’s chores! We know that putting first

things first means we “work first, then play.” Use
this as an opportunity to do something unexpected for a
family member.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Have a Family Game Night

Pull out the old board games and decks of cards.

Split your family into groups and take turns
playing different games set up throughout the
family room. Don’t forget the candy,
popcorn, pretzels and chips!
Habit 5: Listen First, Talk Second

Have One on One Time with a Family Member

We spend a lot of time with our families as a whole. But we

sometimes forget to schedule one on one time with each
family member! Take some time to do an activity with one
person at a time. Choose what is meaningful to that person
and use it as an opportunity to refresh the relationship. Talk
about what is important to that person, what makes that
person laugh, and what their dreams and passions are.
Habit 6: Synergize

Make a Meal Together

Work together in the kitchen to prepare a meal.

Mealtimes are about every member of the family,
why shouldn’t the prep be too? Have each member
of the family choose a part of the meal to prepare!
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Wash the Car Together

Washing the car is a great way to cool off in the

sunshine, get some exercise, spend time together,
and get a much needed chore taken care of! By
doing this as a family, you are sharpening the saw
and taking care of jobs around the house!
