OBJECTIVES

• Define IP address and Subnet Mask

• Convert IP address in decimal number to binary number; and
• Observe the importance of using the correct IP address and Subnet
Mask by connecting every device on the network
ACTIVITY #1 ( 5 mins)

• Instruction:
• The class will have a group activity. (students will count off from 1 to 7)
• Each group will have three representative to give their IP address, Subnet ,Mask
and DNS server.
• The group will connect to the router. (Name of the Router – demo:Projectbased ,
passkey: lsssnhs_123)
• The group will open the command line and type ipconfig/all.
• There will be a student representative to give their laptop’s ip address, another
representative for the subnet mask and another representative for the DNS
server.

IP addressing

• Used to identify a device on the network.

• It represents where you live in the internet
• Each device on a network must have a unique IP
address to communicate with other network
devices.
• Network devices are devices that move data across
the network, including hubs, switches, and routers.
Example.

* In an IPV4 Address. Each packet uses a 32 binary bits

(ones and zeros ) source of destination addresses.
• The 32 bits are grouped into four 8-bit bytes called
octets
• When a host is configured with an IP address, it is
entered as a dotted decimal number, such as
192.168.1.5. Imagine if you had to enter the 32-bit
binary equivalent of this:
11000000101010000000000100000101.
• The logical 32-bit IP address is hierarchical and is
composed of two parts. The first part identifies the
network, and the second part identifies a host on that
network.
• The first three octets identifies the network and the
last octet identifies the host on the network
IP addresses are divided into the following
five classes:
• Class A – Large networks, implemented by large companies and
some countries , ranging from 0-127
• Class B – Medium-sized networks, implemented by universities,
ranging from 128- 191
• Class C – Small networks, implemented by ISPs for customer
subscriptions, ranging from 192- 223
• Class D – Special use for multicasting, ranging from 224 to 239
• Class E – Used for experimental testing, ranging from 239 to 255
The subnet mask indicates the network
portion of an IP address

• Dotted decimal like an IP address

• Usually all host in a LAN use the same subnet mask
• 255.0.0.0 – Class A, which indicates that the first octet of the IP
address is the network portion
• 255.255.0.0 – Class B, which indicates that the first two octets of
the IP address is the network portion
• 255.255.255.0 – Class C, which indicates that the first three octets
of the IP address is the network portion
CONVERSION.
Manual config of IP.

• Go to the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

settings in the Properties window for the NIC.
• The NIC enables a computer to connect to a network using a
MAC address. Whereas the IP address is a logical address
that is defined by the network administrator, a MAC address
is "burned-in" or permanently programmed into the NIC
when it is manufactured. The IP address of a NIC can be
changed, but the MAC address never changes.
ACTIVITY ( 5 mins.)
2
• The students will stay in their group for a paper
pass activity.
• There will be music to play and when it stops, the
student who is handling the paper will be the one to
answer the given IP address and convert it to binary
number. The next two students from the one who is
handling the paper will be the one to give the
subnet mask and ip address class.

Activity (2 mins.) 3
• The students will stay in their group.
• Each member of the group will convert the IP address to binary
numbers and write its corresponding subnet mask and write which IP
address class is appropriate in the IP address.
• Only one representative in each group to write their answers on the
board.
• Be prepared to discuss your work
Ex.

Write the equivalent binary ip address, Subnet Mask and

IP address class

AGREEMENT : PROJECT/ OUTPUT BASED

• NAME OF PROJECT:NETWORK DESIGN OF THE SHS

ECLASSROOM, JHS E CLASSROOM AND THE
COMPUTER LABORATORY
PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

• AT THE END OF THE PROJECT, THE LEARNERS WILL BE ABLE

TO :
• Develop a deep understanding of the CISCO Packet Tracer
simulation software by performing data networking and
following the network design of the SHS , JHS E-classroom and
Computer Laboratory.
• Build a network design of the SHS E-classroom, JHS E- classroom
and Computer Laboratory.
• Observe the importance of using the correct IP address and
Subnet Mask by connecting every device on the network.
PROJECT SPECIFICATION :

• Every group will have 3 members (countoff)

• To fully understand the topic that we had previously and topic that
we have today related to IP addressing and Subnet Mask.
• They are going to build a network design of the SHS E-classroom,
JHS E- classroom and Computer Laboratory with the use of the
packet tracer simulation software developed by CISCO.
• They are going to use the appropriate cable ( copper straight thru A
or B/ or a Copper Cross Over and networking devices such as hub,
router, switch, that you have learned from our previous lesson.
PROJECT SPECIFICATION :

• In each workstation , they are going to apply the appropriate or the

correct ip address and subnet mask. ( Remember from our lesson
today that if you write the ip address incorrectly ,you cannot network
the devices and you cannot have file sharing and share of resources.
• If there is a need for you to have an interview with the computer lab
incharge, They must have a letter first and ask permission to them.
You can get your letter format to me after our class..
SOFTWARE NEEDED

• CISCO PACKET TRACER FOR STUDENTS

• The teacher will be providing the CISCO Packet Tracer Simulation
Program. They are going to explore the CISCO Packet Tracer
simulation program, and if there are vague information there, you
can search for a tutorial in internet.
• Here are the links :

• Moreover, if they do not have the internet
connection, the teacher can provide them
with the offline tutorials. They will submit
their flash drive after your last period in the
afternoon.
