modern clubbing resorts, the Danube Delta, the Carpathian mountains with their very good hiking paths and skiing resorts or Moldova

Rich history of education
• Sungkyunkwan University(SKKU) was established in 1398 and is the
oldest university in Asia.
By comparison:
• 1640 – Academia Vasiliana, founded by prince Vasile Lupu in Iasi
• end of The 17th c. – Academy of Bucharest, opened by the prince
Constantin Brancoveanu.
• 1857 – the National School for Medicine and Surgery was set up in
Bucharest
• 1864 – National School for Bridges, Highways, Mining and
Architecture was opened, to become later the nucleus of the
Polytechnic School in Bucharest
• 1860 – University of Iasi and 1864 – University of Bucharest - the first
Romanian universities, established by prince Al. I. Cuza, who also
issued the first Public Education Law (1864).
Romanian Education System
Structure of universities
• The national educational system includes both public
and private higher education institutions:
• 56 accredited public higher education institutions
(49 civilian higher education institutions and 7
military universities),
• 35 accredited private higher education institutions,
• 5 post university academic schools.

The academic year usually begins on October 1st .


The university level
The three cycles of higher education are:
• Undergraduate studies, with a length that varies
according to the field :
• 6 semesters (3 years) for sciences, humanities,
economic and social sciences, political sciences.
• 8 semesters (4 years) for engineering, technique.
• 12 semesters (6 years) for general medicine, dental
medicine, veterinary medicine and architecture.
• Master studies: 1 - 2 years, for university graduates;
• Ph. D. studies: 3-4 years.
The post-university studies
The post-university programs offered by the
Romanian educational system are:
• Post-Ph.D. programs, with a minimum length
of 1 year;
• Specialisation studies, with a length of 2 or
more semesters;
• Lifelong learning programs.
Organization
The undergraduate and the master studies can be
organized as:
• Full-time programs;
• reduced frequency education;
• long distance education.
Ph.D studies and medical studies programs can only be
organized as full-time programs.
Types of diplomas

The qualifications from the higher education system are:


diplomas, certificates, degrees and other official state
documents, with special regime, that confirm the higher
education program graduated and the professional titles.
• Diplomã de licenţã - Bachelor's degree.
• Diplomã de master - Master degree.
• Diplomã de doctor - Doctoral degree (Ph.D.). This is the
highest academic degree awarded in all domains after 3-4
years of study and original research. It requires the passing
of examinations and the submission of an original thesis.
The holder of a doctoral diploma is granted the Ph.D. title
in the respective field of science or arts.
International recognition of diplomas
• Romania signed the Convention on the Recognition of
Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European
Region (Lisabona 1997), and, at the same time, it is part of the
Bologna Process concerning the implementation of the common
European Higher Education area.
• Through commitments assumed at the European level, focused
on quality assurance, credit transfers and transparency of
educational programmes description, qualifications (diplomas)
obtained in the Romanian Higher Education ensured the
academic and professional mobility of the graduates all over the
world.
• The recognition and the equivalance of the diplomas is assured
by the National Center for Recognition and Equivalance of
Diplomas (CNRED), on the basis of a methodology approved by
order of the Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sports.
