JOURNEY OF INTERNET

How it was and how it is now

We gratefully acknowledge our indebtedness to innumerable teachers
of our college for constantly guiding us and enriching our knowledge
about various topics related to technical fields. They have been a great
source of inspiration to us.

Our greatful thanks are due to,

Mr.Patange

For guiding and helping us to create a report on subject which

deals with one of very creative and developing technology .

Description of the term internet
The basic idea behind internet
Internet Protocol(IP)
Growth of Internet
Complexity of Internet simplified
Point to point linkage
between nodes.

Standardization of
Internet Protocol(IP).

Formation of a world
wide inter-connected
network .
 In 1982 the internet protocol(IP) was standardized and the
concept of world wide network of fully interconnected
network called the ‘internet’ was introduced.

 Considerable increase in speed.

 Large data transfer between two nodes.

 Internet brought down from desks to our palms.

 The history of the Internet starts in the 1950s and 1960s with the
development of computers.

This began with point-to-point

communication between mainframe
computers and terminals, expanded to point-to-point
connections between computers and then early research
into packet switching.

 Packet switched networks such as ARPANET, MarkI

at NPL in the UK, CYCLADES, Merit Network, Tymnet, and Telenet,
were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s using a variety
of protocols.
 With so many different network methods, something was
needed to unify them. Robert E.
Kahn of DARPA and ARPANET recruited Vinton
Cerf of Stanford University to work with him on the problem.
By 1973, they had soon worked out a fundamental
reformulation, where the differences between network protocols
were hidden by using a common internetwork protocol.
 The specification of the resulting protocol, RFC 675 –
Specification of Internet Transmission Control Program, by
Vinton Cerf, Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine, Network Working
Group, December 1974, contains the first attested use of the
term internet, as a shorthand for internetworking
 All this led to creation of Network of Networks and then it
was the birth of Internet.
 The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer
networks that use the standard Internet Protocol
Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is
a network of networks that consists of millions of private,
public, academic, business, and government networks, of
local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of
electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The
Internet carries a vast range of information resources and
services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of
the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to
support electronic mail.
 Suddenly the low price of reaching millions worldwide,
and the possibility of selling to or hearing from those
people at the same moment when they were reached,
promised to overturn established business dogma in
advertising, mail-order sales, customer relationship
management, and many more areas.
 FTP e-mail gateways allowed people that lived outside
the US and Europe to download files using ftp
commands written inside e-email messages. The file was
encoded, broken in pieces and sent by e-mail; the
receiver had to reassemble and decode it later
In past internet was not used as much
because of its low speed , high cost and
lack of technology. But now techniques
are improving as time changes. We can
connect to the internet directly.
The term Wi-Fi suggests Wireless Fidelity, resembling the long-
established audio-equipment classification term Hi-Fi . Wi-Fi
is a mechanism for wirelessly connecting electronic devices. A
device enabled with Wi-Fi, such as a personal computer, video
game console, smart-phone, or digital audio player, can
connect to the Internet via a wireless network access point. An
access point (or hotspot) has a range of about 20 meters (65 ft)
indoors and a greater range outdoors. Multiple overlapping
access points can cover large areas . Wi-Fi allows cheaper
deployment of local area networks (LANs). Also spaces where
cables cannot be run, such as outdoor areas and historical
buildings, can host wireless LANs. Wi-Fi networks have limited
range. A typical wireless router using 802.11b or 802.11g with a
stock antenna might have a range of 32 m (120 ft) indoors and
95 m (300 ft) outdoors.
Wi-Fi router is used to
provide internet access to
more than one computer
or devices .
The first mobile phone with Internet connectivity was
the Nokia 9000 Communicator, launched in Finland in
1996.
To make efficient use of the small screen and tiny
keypad and one-handed operation typical of mobile
phones, a specific document and networking model
was created for mobile devices, the Wireless
Application Protocol (WAP). Most mobile device
Internet services operate using WAP.
Nowadays we can access the internet on laptop or pc
through the mobile devices also . The device is
connected to pc via bluetooth , data cable simply
and shares the internet services. The cross-over
occurred in 2008, when more Internet access devices
were mobile phones than personal computers. In
many parts of the developing world, the ratio is as
much as 10 mobile phone users to one personal
computer.

INTERNET GROWTH STATISTICS
Today's road to e-Commerce and Global Trade

Number of users

The year 2010 estimated that about one quarter of

earths population uses the services of internet
Already in the 1970s, many peopled dreamed of everyone
being able to communicate via computers. Several
attempts were made to establish services through data
networks.

In 1994, the first Internet search engines were introduced,

which naturally facilitated the identification of services
and content.
Thus we can say that,
The internet is a global system of inter-connected
computer network that use the standard Internet
Protocol Suite(TCP/IP) to serve billions of user
worldwide
It enabled new forms of interactions through
instant messaging , Internet forums and social
networking
Today internet is widely used all over the world .
With the growth in technology the use of internet
has also grown. Now –a- days a person can
perform almost all his work just by making use
internet
All this is the result of revolution in 1996 because
of which life has become so easy and in the years
it is going to be more easier
In 1990’s people could only send data
,communicate over a small region or place and
now one can communicate with others anywhere
in the world
In 1990’s people only used internet for business
purposes mainly and now people make use of it
for their personal purposes too
Today it can be rightly said that life without
internet is not possible.
One cannot even dream that life would become
more easier if people stop using internet
In coming future one could even get shocked
that in past people had ever made use of books
or letter for communication
Thus internet has made life easy and fast more
than one could imagine.
