Green Construction
To reduce the amount of lumber used on a house, the carpenter can line up wall studs 24” O.C.
Green framing is NOT more expensive to frame a house.
Green house can last longer, have fewer problems and use less structural
lumber than traditional Western framed houses.

Typically, the demand for energy efficient houses has created the
demand (rising energy costs).
To decrease the amount of lumber used to build a house, 2 x 6’ s
at 24” OC can be used.
Green building allows the carpenter to use a METAL BRACKET in
place of a header.
To increase “R” value (or resistance in terms of cold or warm air) when
framing a header, add rigid insulation as the ½” piece of plywood in
the header.
When placing rafters the carpenter NEEDS TO ALIGN THE RAFTERS
WITH THE STUD WALLS in the wall. This allows for 24” oc and no
second top plate.
Green building allows for SOME HEADERS TO BE ELIMINATED…..

A double top plate can be eliminated if we line up the studs and joists
from first to second floor.
When two walls are joined at a corner, ONLY TWO 2 STUDS are used
when we normally would use three.
On exterior walls, osb can be replaced with a high “R” value
foam board.
WALL STUDS are LINED UP with FLOOR JOISTS whenever possible.
Allows for 24” OC studs.
In green construction, walls will typically be even lengths.
Insulation in a traditional 2 x 4 wall is R 13. In a 2 x 6 wall, the R
value is 24.
When laying out a house on a lot the two most important things you
can do is face the house South for Winter sunlight and positioning
the solar panels.
House wrap helps deflect wind and water but allows water
to evaporate.
“R” value stands for the capacity of an insulating material
to resist heat flow.
To join two walls together, A NAILING PLATE IS USED, NOT a
second top plate.
STEEL FIBERGLASS INSULATED DOORS are 5 TIMES more energy efficient
than a wood door.
Location of the house determines the amount of insulation required….
