STEEL
 What is steel
Steel is an alloy of iron, primarily carbo along
with some other alloying elements such as
mangsnese,chromium and nickel.
Steel is a iron carbon alloy which does not
undergo eutectic reaction.
The carbon in typical steel alloys may contribute
upto 2.14% of its weight.
Types of steels

According to American Iron and Steel Institute

(AISI),steel can be broadly categorized into four groups
based on their chemical composition.
 Carbon steels
 Alloy steels
 Stainless steel
 Tool steel
spring steel comes under category of carbon steel.
what is strongest steel?
 STEEL containing elements Tungsten, Titanium, and Chromium. Its tensile
strength to density ratio is higher than any natural metal, even tungsten,
but it scores lower on the Mohs scale of hardness. It is also extraordinarily
resistant to corrosion
Spring
steel:
The steel which is
widely used in the
manufacture of springs
prominently in
automotive and
industrial suspension
applications.
WHY ONLY SPRING STEEL?
Although we have different (3000) types of steels are
available for our industrial purposes and automobile purposes
spring steel have its unique feature of having high corrosion
resistance and high tensile strength. They are thoroughly
checked at every stage of production to ensure the quality
with international standards.

What metals are in spring steel?

Here's a brief overview of some of the most

common metal choices.
 Stainless Steel. Stainless steel is 'regular' steel, plus a
little chromium and nickel.
 Brass. There is quite a bit of diversity within the family of
materials known as brass, an alloy of copper and zinc.
 Spring BrassSpring.
 Beryllium Copper.
 Titanium alloy steels.
PROPERTIES OF
SPRING STEEL
 Manufactured to very high
yield strengths.
 Ability to resist
deformation,return to shape.
 Ability to absorb shock
 Ability to resist snapping.
 Good pliability.
 Hardened steel and spring
steel combined type of steel
known as tempered steel.
Uses of spring steel

 Spring steel is also commonly used in the manufacture of metal

swords both historically and for stage combat due to its
resistance to bending, snapping or shattering.
 Tubular spring steel is used in the landing gear of some small
aircraft due to its ability to absorb the impact of landing.
 Spring steel is one of the most popular materials used in the
fabrication of lockpicks due to its pliability and resilience.
 It is used in binder clips.
 watches: balance springs in mechanical timepieces and spring
loaded bars for attaching the bands and the clasps.
Uses of spring steel

 Vehicles : vehicle suspension

 Pop-open devices: cd-players,tape-recorders.
 Pens
 Spring mattresses
 Trampoline
 Pogo stick
 Jewelry: clasp mechanisms.
 Piano wires.
Can we bend spring steel?

YES, you can heat with torch, or on stove, to red

and let cool. Forming may take a couple rounds of
annealing, if you have to do much bending. Bend
about 90 deg, then anneal, then complete, if over
90 deg bending is required. When you have it to the
right shape, heat again, and then quench in oil or
water.
TYPES OF
SPRINGS
 Compression springs
 Torsion springs
 Hefty die springs
 Custom springs
 Extension springs
 Redux wave springs
SPRING TEMPER
A temper induced in steel to increase its
upper limit of elasticity by hardening and
tempering in the ordinary way and then
reheating until the steel assumes a bright
blue color or also : a similar temper
produced in brass by an extreme amount of
cold rolling . It is known as spring temper.
SPRUNG STEEL
 Sprung steel is a low alloy, medium carbon
kind of steel. This alloy is used in springs
because it does not easily lose its form.
Technically, this means it has a higher
elastic modulus compared to other steels .
Silicon is the key component to most spring
steel alloys.
