Introduction
 Increasing demand of electricity with
population.
 Shortage of conventional energy resources.
 Power generation using eco friendly
methods.
 Emphasis on specially designed speed
breaker to produce electricity.
 Effective way to produce electricity as
number of vehicles are ever increasing.
 Kinetic energy wasted on roads can be used
to generate electricity
 This project uses rack and pinion
mechanism to produce electricity.
 This prototype can be placed in heavy traffic
area.

Components
Spring Assembly

 It supports the speed breaker structure.

 Whenever a vehicle passes from speed
breaker spring compresses.
 And when vehicle goes off spring is realised.
 Expansion and compression of spring gives
vertical movement in the system.
Mechanical Components

 Rack and Pinion.

 Sprockets and Chain.
 Flywheel.
 Gears.
Rack & Pinion

 They are type of linear actuators which converts

linear motion to rotational.
 Rack is linear mechanism and pinion is circular.
 The speed at which rack moves the pinion depends
on pinion gear diameter.
 When vehicle passes the breaker a vertical
movement is observed which drives the rack and so
pinion connected rotates.
Sprocket & Chain

 It is a wheel with teeth that mesh with chain.

 They are used to transmit rotary motion from in two
different shaft by use of chain.
 It consist of two parts driver and driven.
 Driver wheel has greater diameter than driven which
increase the speed.
Flywheel

 Device designed to store rotational energy.

 They resist/increase speed with their moment of
inertia.
 Conserves energy during starting and stopping.
 It is a wheel which needs lot of force to spin.
 Due to angular momentum spins continuously and
stores kinetic energy.
 It also smooth output.
Gears

 It is a rotational device with teeth which mesh with

another toothed device to transmit torque.
 They can change speed and torque.
 With gear reduction output speed can be reduced
and torque can be increased.
 Gears also change direction of rotation.
DC Generator

 Permanent Magnet DC Machine is used.

 We use permanent magnets to remove external dc
excitation.
 These are made of made of rare metals Neodymium
to produce strong stator field.
 They are good choice for small scale electricity
generation, with good efficiency
Diagram
Methodology

 When vehicle passes over the speed breaker the

systems has a vertical movement.
 The vertical movement is converted to rotational
from rack and pinion mechanism.
 This mechanical input is fed to generator which
converts it to electrical output.
 This energy is stored in batteries which is used to
light up street lights, traffic signals etc.
 Power generated is eco friendly and can be produced
throughout the year.

Application

• This technique can be used in all highways &

roadside speed breaker.
• Street lights.
• Road signals.
• Sign board on the roads.
• Lighting of the bus stops.
• Lighting of check posts on all highways.
COST

 Rack and pinion mechanism – Rs 165

 PMDC machine – Rs 500
 Battery – Rs 400
Conclusion

 Electricity plays an important role in our life.

 Due to population , current power generation
has become insufficient for everybody’s
requirement.
 We discover technology to generate electricity
from speed breaker which is reliable and
efficient.
 New non conventional method of power
generation.
