THE ECONOMIC & POLITICAL
CONTEXT OF HOMELESSNESS IN THE UK
Homelessness is presented across all 3 video clips as an important issue that
we need to raise awareness towards.
Although its importance is highlighted throughout, all 3 clips show this in
different ways & portray different sides/ elements of homelessness
SKY NEWS--- HOMELESSNESS
Average age of death is 47
This clip overall links homelessness to the crime scene & presents it in a darker light
Sound- Sad, minor key, dark music overlaid
- Represents lack of hope, circle of poverty, hard to get out of homelessness once youre in
it
Mise En Scene- dark lighting, simplistic location- night-time, dont see homeless mans
face
- Represents uncertainty in what will happen next, not showing his face implies the element
of crime: he may had been a victim/ perpetrator of crime in the past in order to survive
etc.
Camera- Wide shots, mid shots
BBC--- HOMELESSNESS
Displays homelessness in a hopeful light, women is portrayed as a victim unlike in the
previous Sky News clip. Further mentions issues such as abuse & lack of authority
attention/help
Sound- Synchronised chat dialogue
- Represents it as a topic that can be overcome if we raise our voices & make
ourselves heard, speak against the issue and raise awareness
Mise en Scene- light lighting (daytime)
- Represents optimism towards getting out of homelessness
Camera- mid shots & close ups
-Shows emotions of the victim & highlights the difficultness of being homeless, makes
the audience feel empathy towards her & people in similar positions as she was
AL JEZEERA--- HOMELESSNESS
A more political & economic view on Britain's issue with homelessness
Sound- Synchronised dialogue
Mise en Scene- Multiple victims, mainly of mixed race (immigrants)
- Represents anyone can be affected, multi cultural issue
Camera- Over the shoulder
- hid the homeless peoples identities, further portray homelessness as uncertain
& emphasis mystery in what will happen
FACTS & STATISTICS ON
HOMELESSNESS
THE BIG ISSUE- WHOS THEIR
DEMOGRAPHIC?
https://www.bigissue.com/advertising/
The Big Issue appeals to a wider audience than other magazines on the
market such as Heat or Vogue. One of the reasons we can presume this is is
because it covers a wide range of topics, therefore no two copies are the
same. Due to each issue being dissimilar, the product appeals to practically
anyone. Each issue varies so much so that if one demographic doesnt like it
chance are another will. Another reason for The Big Issue having a wide
demographic & TA is because the message of the street newspaper doesnt
appeal to just one demographic, but appeals to anyone who wants to help
the cause of raising awareness for homelessness & helping people better off
their lives. Buying the Big Issue -in a sense- is helping people in need, & there
isnt just one specific group of people who would want to do this. I believe
these are the two reasons why this products TA is so wide.
ADVERTISEMENT IN THE BIG ISSUE
Each issue features different advertisements. These advertisements are specifically chosen to appeal
to the demographic who buy the newspaper.
Examples of advertisements in The Big Issue:
Royal Albert Hall theatre tickets
Smart Energy
Organic Vitamins
Triodos Bank
One Village Soap
Dog Sponsorship
Although previously I stated that the Big Issue doesnt have one specific demographic, from looking
at the generic things advertised in the newspaper we can further assume that the majority of its
readers are higher in the social grading (ABC1 Grade). I think this is because although anyone of any
social grading may want to help ,buy donating money in return for the newspaper, only people of
ABC1 Grade have the financial stability to be able to spare the money for the cause.
3 ICONIC THE BIG ISSUE COVERS
THAT DEMONSTRATE DIFFERENT AUDIENCES THAT
IT APPEALS TO
This cover revolves around a political topic, we can presume that
because of the topic its focusing on that itll appeal to higher
class people who stereotypically are more into politics
(AB Social Grade).

This cover also references the film They Live, therefore adults
who would have been teens when the film came out may also
buy this issue.

This cover suggests an that education is the focal point of this issue.
Although education is a topic that may/ does appeal to all age
groups & demographics, we could presume that this will appeal to
young adults in higher levels of education (college & university)
due to it implying to the audience that inside the issue are life
hacks for a successful, better future. Young adults who are
starting new leaves of life & starting to look to where theyll be in
the future may find this implied guidance helpful. Due to financial
security & stability for young adults becoming harder to secure at
such a young age (18-29) we could presume this would appeal to
stereotypically CD Social Grades.

However their may be acceptations to this assumption as I also

predict that people from private school educations or just
generally good educations may find interest in this. Adults who
would be these people stereotypically are within the ABC Social
Grade.
3 ICONIC THE BIG ISSUE COVERS
THAT DEMONSTRATE DIFFERENT AUDIENCES THAT
IT APPEALS TO

This cover represents the content inside the street newspaper

to be based around the topic of feminism & equality. This
would appeal to any feminist, or anyone who although does
not class themselves as a feminist still believes the need for
equality in the workplace & home. Therefore, I would say that
this covers all the social grades (ABC1C2DE) because lack of
inequality/ feminist viewpoints can affect anyone regardless
of your job status or wealth.
