DEMONSTRATION
MEHTOD OF TEACHING
introduction

Knowledge advances not by repeating known facts but by refuting false dogmas. -Karl Popper

The dictionary meaning of the word Demonstration is the outward showing of

a feeling, etc. A description and explanation by experiment; so also logically
to prove the truth; or use the demonstration to teach the skills. This method
of teaching is based on the simple, yet sound principal that we learn by
doing. Students learn physical or mental skills by actually performing those
skills under supervision.

We will discuss each of these in the coming slides

Characteristics & Purposes
of Demonstration

Practice makes perfect or at least progress

Characteristics of Demonstration

a) The demonstrator should understand the entire procedure before

attempting to perform.

b)All equipment needed should be assembled and pretested before

demonstration.

c)Positive approach should be used and everybody should have

good view of the demonstration.

d)Discussion period should always follow the demonstration.

e)The students should be provided with the opportunities for

prompt practice of the procedure.

f)Setting for demonstration should be as true to life as possible.

Purposes of Demonstration

To carry out experiments related to

nursing practical.

To teach nursing procedure in the class

room and clinical setting.

To enable establishment of effective nurse

patient relationship.

To show the learner how to perform

certain psychomotor skills.

To show the learner why certain things

occurs.

To equip the students with skills to

provide standardized care.
Preparation and
performance of
Demonstration
Planning and preparation of Demonstration

State objective to the learner.

The entire group should be less than 15 students to view the procedure
clearly.

It should be planned and rehearsed by the teacher beforehand.

Adequate lighting.

Apparatus should be placed in order and on left hand.

Clear statement about the purpose of demonstration should be made.

Procedure should be demonstrated step by step

Performance of Demonstration

Proceed slowly with the demonstration for better understanding.

Whenever possible Involve students in demonstration.

Make sure, after every step whether students have grasped the meaning.

Give suitable verbal explanation for highlighting the interest of the students.

Make an assignment based on the demonstration.

Demonstration should be quick and slick.

Active participation of students

Summery of the principles arrived at as result of the demonstration should be

explained at end.
Evaluation of Demonstration

Evaluate through return demonstration by observing students .

While taking re-demonstration compare steps of procedure with planned set

criteria.

As the teacher receives feedback from the students , the goals can be established
for improving skills.

Strengthen positive behavior and elimination of limitations.

Phase and
Effective use
of Demonstration
Phases of the Demonstration

Explanation Phase

Demonstration Phase

Student Performance Phase

Evaluation Phase
Effective use of Demonstration

Required material, selection of time and place

Good communication skills

Step by step explanation

Equipment should be tested before

Procedure should be done on live model if possible

Discussion, question and summary recall

Return demonstration should be taken
the
outcome
Common error in using Demonstration

Apparatus may not be ready

for use or not working.

There may not an apparent

relation between the
Demonstration experiment
and the topic under
discussion

Theory class may not have

been taken.
Teacher may not address the
issue of individual .

Teacher my be in a hurry to
arrive at generalization.

Teacher may talk

unnecessarily and may fail to
ask right questions.

The group may too large to

see the demonstration
properly.
Advantage of Demonstration

1.Enables students to acquire first hand information

2.Brings close relationship between theory and practice

3.Activates several senses by hand experience

4.Makes familiar with nature and use of apparatus.

5.Gives opportunity to evaluate the student's knowledge

6.It serves strong motivation force keeps the students active

7.Return demonstration by the student under supervision of the

teacher provides an opportunity for well directed practice
disadvantage of Demonstration

1. Number of students is limited.

2. Keeps the students in passive situation.

3. Offer little possibility of checking the

learning process.

4. Does not allow for individual paces of

learning.

5. High cost in personal and time.

6. Difficulty in repeating Demonstration in
order to acquire competence.
CONCLUSION
Learning styles are unique to all people. There
are deep learners and surface learners,
demonstration as a teaching method is useful
as it will engage both types of learners. The
more senses involved in a learning situation,
the better knowledge will be assimilated.
Therefore when evaluating a learner through
return demonstration , the learner will
demonstrate a more confident and strong
ability to perform.
