LEARNING STYLES
Different approaches or methods of learning
Indicate how people learn in uniquely different ways
To enhance effective learning by improving on teaching
strategies and instructional materials used

Some are global (holistic) thinker and some are analytic

Some learn better from auditory sources than visual stimuli
Some learn better with group than independently or alone

STYLE IN NURSING

KOLBS THEORY OF EXPERIENTIAL
LEARNING
- Proposed by David Kolb
- Kolb proposed that a learner moves through a spiral of
immediate experience which lead to observation and
reflections on the experience
- Kolb proposed that an individuals learning style was the
product of two pairs of preferences we have in how we
approach the task of learning
KOLBS THEORY OF EXPERIENTIAL
LEARNING
4 STAGES OR CYCLE OF LEARNING

CONCRETE EXPERIENCE (CE) learning from actual experience

REFLECTIVE OBSERVATION (RO) learning by observing others
ABSTRACT CONCEPTUALIZATION (AC) creating theories to explain
what is seen
ACTIVE EXPERIMENTATION (AE) using theories to solve problem

Concrete Experience (CE)

DO

Active Experimentation (AE) Reflective Observation (RO)

PLAN REFLECT

Abstract Conceptualisation (AC)

THINK
CONVERGER (AC and AE; doing and thinking)

LEARNS BY AC AND AE
Good at decision-making, problem solving and prefers
dealing with technical work rather than interpersonal
relationships
Practical application of ideas

LEARNING METHODS: learns best through demonstration,

return demonstration assisted by handouts, diagrams, etc
DIVERGER (CE and RO; feeling and watching)

STRESSES CE AND RO
people and feeling oriented, likes to work in groups
observe rather than take action
LEARNING METHODS: learns best through group
discussions and brain storming sessions
ACCOMODATOR (CE and AE; doing and feeling)

RELIES HEAVILY ON CE AND AE

Risk taker, often using trial and error methods of problem solving
Learns primarily on hands-on
LEARNING METHODS: enjoys role-playing, gaming and computer
simulations
Most challenging learners because they learn best through new
and exciting learning experiences and are not afraid to take risk
which may sometimes endanger their safety
ASSIMILATOR (AC and RO; watching and thinking)

EMPHASIZES AC AND RO
More concerned with abstracts ideas than
people; uses logical thinking
LEARNING METHODS: learn best through
lectures, and self instruction methods
GREGORC COGNITIVE STYLE MODELS

Provides an organized way to consider how the mind works

The mind has the mediation abilities of perception and ordering
knowledge which affects how a person learn.

PERCEPTUAL QUALITY way one receives or grasps incoming

information
ORDERING ABILITY way one arranges and systemizes incoming
stimuli
PERCEPTUAL QUALITY
CONCRETE enables you to register information directly
through the five senses
ABSTRACT allows you to visualize, to conceive ideas, to
understand or believe that which you cannot see.

ORDERING ABILITY
SEQUENTIAL allow mind to organize information in a
linear, step by step manner
RANDOM lets mind organize information by chunks and in
no particular order
4 COMBINATIONS
1. CONCRETE SEQUENTIAL likes highly structured
environment without interruptions, like concrete learning
materials especially visuals
2. CONCRETE RANDOM intuitive, trial and error method of
learning, looks for alternatives
3. ABSTRACT SEQUENTIAL holistic thinkers and need
consistency in the learning environment, have good verbal skills
4. ABSTRACT RANDOM think holistically, prefer busy,
unstructured learning environments
