a).

Uncountable nouns are things we cannot


count. They have no plural.
Gold, music, luck, water, excitement,
blood, rice etc.

You can not say one rice, two rices etc.

Examples:
It wasnt your fault. It was bad luck.
We havent got enough water.
b). You cannot normally use a/an with
uncountable nouns. But you can often
use a ... Of

Examples:
A bowl of rice
A piece of music
A drop of water
c).Before uncountable nouns you can say the/ some/ any/ much/
this/ his etc

The music, some gold, much excitement, his blood

Examples:
Did you buy any apple juice?
We didnt do much shopping.

d).You can also use uncountable nouns alone, with no article.

Examples:
There is blood on your shirt
This ring is made of gold.
e).Many nouns can be used as countable nouns or as
uncountable nouns. (There is a different in meaning).

Noise:
Did you hear a noise just now? (a particular noise
countable)
I cant work here. There is too much noise (not too many
noises uncountable)

Paper:
I bought a paper (a newspaper - countable)
I bought some paper (material for writing on
uncountable)
Hair:
Theres a hair in my soup! (one single hair
countable)
She has beautiful hair (hair on her head
uncountable)

Experience:
We had many interesting experiences during our
holiday (things that happened to us
countable)
You need experience for this job (knowledge for
something uncountable)
a).Countable nouns are things we can count.
We can make them plural.

Two dogs, six jobs, some girls, many


suggestions.

Examples:
I eat a banana every day
I like bananas
It wasnt your fault. It was an accident
b).Before singular countable nouns you can use
a/an

Thats a good suggestion


Do you need an umbrella?

You cannot use singular countable nouns


alone

Im looking for a job (not Im looking for job)


Be careful of the dog (not be careful of dog)
Ive got a headache (not Ive got headache)
c). You can use some and any with plural
countable nouns:

We sang some songs


Did you buy any apples?

d). We use many and few with plural


countable nouns:

We didnt take many photographs


I have a few jobs to do
We often use a/an + noun when we say what
something/ someone is, or what something/
someone is like

A dog is an animal
This is a really beautiful houses
What a lovely dress!
Tom is a very nice person
Jack has got a big nose

NOTE: remember to use a/ an for jobs:


Toms father is a doctor
I wouldnt like to be an English teacher.
We also use some with plural countable nouns.
Some = a number of/ a few of (but we dont
know or say exactly how many)

Ive seen some good films recently


Some friends of mine are coming to stay at the
week-end

NOTE: do not use some when you are talking


about things in general.

For example: I love bananas
