CAVE MINING METHODS

These methods of caving in mining are classified into 3 categories:

long-wall mining, sublevel caving and block caving. We require for this
a large mineral body.
When exploited in a massive way, there is a risk of waste dilution and
ore loss.

VOCABULARY
CAVING: hundimiento
SUBLEVEL CAVING: Hundimiento por subniveles, derrumbamiento de
subnivel.
ORE BODY: Cuerpo mineralizado
GRADES: Leyes
WASTE DILUTION: Dilucin de desechos

BLOCK CAVING METHOD

It is a massive mining system where extraction depends on gravity, where
large proportions of ore are broken, where it is stored and caving by
gravity.
This method of exploitation is low cost but high initial investment. We
require drilling and blasting for the production operation, where large
blocks of 1000 m2 are formed.
The mineral is fragmented by the action of gravity forces and pressure
between blocks which allows extraction through draw points.
Being a massive method, block caving results in a lower extraction cost
per ton than any other underground method.

CONCLUSIONS

Mining projects due to various parameters and sources of

uncertainty in whole of their life cycle are always considered as high
risk projects.
In time and proper identification, assessment and then management
of risks in these projects leads to decrease the danger of losing
sources (capital, time, human), increases the chance of a
successful operation and hence will extend the application of such
projects.
