Teacher I, Atimonan National Comprehensive High School Objectives Explain the meaning of research; Different the three categories of research; Determine the various research designs and methodologies; Identify the problems existing within the classroom and the school community; Formulate their own title, and research problems; Orient the participants about the existing Regional Format for Action Research; and Present a sample research proposal following the regional format. What is RESEARCH? What is RESEARCH? A scientific investigation of phenomena which includes the collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data and information aimed at solving a particular problem.
A systematic process of collecting and logically
analyzing data or information for some specific purpose (McMillan and Schumacher, 1989). A systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among natural phenomena (Kerlinger, 1986).
A scientific and systematic process of collecting data or
information for the purpose of solving a specific problem or clarifying a puzzling predicament. Nature and Characteristics of Research Objectivity Precision Verification Parsimonious Explanation Empiricism Logical reasoning Diversified procedures Systematic and controlled Variety of forms Probabilistic thinking Analytical and critical Replicability, cyclical 3 Basic Types of Research Basic Research Applied Research Action Research What is a BASIC RESEARCH? Research done to test theory Intended to add knowledge of basic principles and scientific laws Advances further scientific inquiry Concerned exclusively with knowing, explaining, and predicting natural and social phenomena Starts with a theory, a basic principle, or a generalization What is an APPLIED RESEARCH? Concerned with the application and development of research-based knowledge Aimed at producing knowledge relevant to providing solution to a general problem Aimed at solving an immediate, practical problem What is an ACTION RESEARCH? Involves the application of the steps of the scientific method for classroom problems A decision-oriented research usually conducted to solve a specific problem in the school Focuses on the situation of day-to-day problems at the local level Involves more precise sampling techniques Usually conducted by teachers, administrators or other educational professionals for solving a specific problem or for providing information for decision making at the local level A tool that is used to help teachers and other educators uncover strategies to improve teaching practices (Sagor, 2004, as cited in OConnor, Greene, & Anderson, 2014). Action research may cover teachers area of interest that they would like to carry out in their classrooms or schools. A professional development opportunity because, frequently, teachers test a new instructional strategy, assess a new curriculum program, or evaluate an existing pedagogical method. Participating in action research has been found to be the impetus for positive change exemplified by teacher improvement, self- reflection, and overall learning that enhances classroom practices (Ferrance, 2000; Johnson and Button, 2000; Ross, Rolheiser, & Hogoboam Gray, 1999; Sax & Fisher, 2001, as cited in OConnor, Greene, & Anderson, 2014). USES of ACTION RESEARCH Action research bridges the gap between theory and practice. It is used to help teachers in identifying the best practices that will help determine and understand as to what is taking place within the classroom. Action research encourages teachers to continuously learn within their classrooms. They will be able to ponder the actions and interaction of students that will lead to the improvement of existing conditions.
