Bonding and Nurturing

What is Bonding?
Bonding is the
formation of close
emotional ties
When does bonding begin?
The bonding
process begins very
soon after birth.
It is especially
important for
premature babies to
bond because it
gives them a sense
of love and
something to live
for.
Three ways to bond
1. Hold the baby right after birth and a lot in the coming
days and weeks. Talk to the baby. Hearing your voice
is also important.
2. Looking into the babys eyes.
3. Touching the baby in calm gentle ways.

Both the mother and

the father or caregiver
can bond with an
infant.
Three basic rules for healthy
bonding and nurturing
1. Be consistent
2. Respond to the
childs needs
quickly
3. Be in tune and
sensitive to the
child. See things
from their point of
view.
What is nurturing?
Nurturing is a
process to promote
development by
providing
nourishment,
support,
encouragement, and
unconditional love
throughout the life
span.
How important is it to nurture a
baby or a child?

Without nurturing
children do not grow
or develop properly
and can even die.
Ohio University Rabbit Study
Students were assigned to feed several
groups of rabbits a high-cholesterol diet
each day. Over time, all but one of the
groups of rabbits began to display the
mal-nutritional symptoms. With the one
group of rabbits that were still thriving it
was found that one of the students was
touching, holding, and talking to the
rabbits.
What happened to the rabbits who
were being held and talked to?

Nurturing and love

seemed to help
the rabbits built an
intolerance to the
toxic diet.
What example from class illustrates
our need for human contact?
Listen to the example
Humans at all ages
crave nurturing and
love from other human
beings. A great
illustration of this is the
elderly. They never
want you to leave
when you visit them.
They long for you love
and affection.
Did you know
We need to have
10 positive
touches each
day!
Why did more babies die in an
orphanage than the prison?
Listen to the study
Lack of love.
There are too many
babies and not
enough nurses to
love and care for
them. Each nurse
had seven babies to
care for.
Harry Harlows Discovery
Listen to the discovery
If there is not bonding and nurturing in
the first six months of the monkeys life,
they were unable to get along with other
monkeys and were extremely afraid.
Another study showed that when they
took a monkey away from their mother
at birth, and gave them a dummy
mother, they did not develop maternal
instincts and had other signs of
emotional stress.
