THE SECOND CONDICIONAL
STRUCTURE:
If the if clause comes first, a comma is
usually used. If the if clause comes second,
there is no need for a comma:
We use different verb forms in each part of a
second conditional:
TO BE
We can use were instead of was with I and
he/she/it. This is mostly done in formal
writing.
NEGATIVE FORM
QUESTIONS
What would you do if you were me?
USES

1. First we can use it to talk about thinks in the future that are probably not
going to be true. Maybe i am imagining some dream.

Example

- If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.

(I probably wont win the lottery)

- If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.

2. Second, we can it to talk about something in the present which is
impossible, because it is no true.

Example

- If I had his number, I would call him.

(I dont have his number now, so its impossible for me to call him).

- If i were you, I would not go out with that man.

- If i were you, I would break up with him.

Could, migth,

3. Sometimes would is replaced by another modal verb (could, might, etc.)

Example

- If I had more money, I could buy a car.

Buying a car would be possible.

- If I won the lottery, I might give all the money to charity.

Giving the money to charity is only a possibility.
First vs. Second conditional
To remember and to reinforce:
This kind of conditional sentence is differrent
from the first conditional because this is a lot
more unlikely.
For example ( Second conditional):
If I had enough money, I would buy a house with
twenty bedrooms and a swimming pool (Im
probably not going to have this much money, its
just a dream, not very real).
BUT
First condicional:
If I have enough money, Ill buy some new
shoes.
(Its much more likely that Ill have enough
money to buy some shoes)
Complete:

If you ____________________________(study) today, you would enjoy

tomorrow.

If you chose a color, I ____________________________(paint) the kitchen.

If I _______________________ (buy) a new car, I would show it to you.

If you didnt give me an excuse, I ________________ (not be) your friend any
more.

What ________________ (you/say) if I didnt say anything?
