INTRODUCTION
Vienna is the capital and the largest city of Austria.
Vienna is Austrias Primary City with a population of 1.8 million.
Vienna has an extensive transportation network with a unified fare system
that integrates municipal, regional and railway systems under the umbrella of
the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR).
Public transport is provided by buses, trams and 5 underground metro lines
(U-Bahn), most operated by the Wiener Linien.
The city forms the hub of the Austrian railway system, with services to all
parts of the country and abroad. The railway system connects Vienna with
other European cities, like Munich, Venice, Budapest, Prague, Bratislava and

INTRODUCTION
The transport master plan of Vienna defines the need of mobility as
intelligent mobility and promotes smart moves and following strategies
can be derived:
Traffic reduction: Mobility- reducing urban development helps in reducing
the trips and their length by promoting local shopping or allowing work and
housing in close proximity
Traffic redistribution: Main objective of the policy is to shift attention from
motorised individual traffic to public transport
Focus is on reduction of modal share of private car traffic to 25% by 2020
Increasing of PT share to 40% by 2020
Keeping the share of trips undertaken on foot at the current high level of 27 %
until 2020.
Strategies:
Ensuring the quality of life:
The ambitious objective of rendering the effects of mobility, as
environmentally friendly as possible, is inspired by four very solid reasons
that impact the life quality of people in Vienna:

Better air quality Less noise pollution

Quality
of Life

Public space High safety for

activities road users
Public Transport and NMT
In recent years, Vienna has already embarked on a promising course due to
the rising share of environmentally friendly transport modes
There has been a decrease of modal share of passenger cars reducing from
40% to 32% in 1993 to 2007 and at the same time people use public transport
and NMT for travelling.
Public Transport and NMT
In transport plan 2003, the city of
Vienna pledged to increase the
density of its public transport
network.
By 2010 U2 underground extension
had attained 75 km and 100 stations
By 2019 u2 line will extend to north
and south meeting the extension of
U1 line .
At the same time, regional train
stations (Schnellbahn) are
continuously modernising, e.g.
Traisengasse or Praterstern. As a
result, the Schnellbahn has become an
attractive urban transport mode and a
comfortable alternative to the car for
commuters from Viennas environs.
Public Transport and NMT
The time-tried tram trolleys which is one of the main transport modes is being
modernised and transformed into a trendy means of transport.
The city of Vienna for promoting trams has introduced many lines as a part of the last
mile connectivity connecting to the underground network
As a part of NMT, bikes are welcome in the city of Vienna, in 10 years from 1997 to
2007 the bikeway network increased from 652km to 1090km
The share of bikes has increased to 8% in 2015 from 5% in 2007
The average cyclists have increased to 9,156 in 2007 from 7,515 in 2002 on workdays
and an increase of 1,800 cyclists on public holidays in the same duration
Public Transport and NMT
To safeguard the interests of people here so that more inhabitants of Vienna can travel
safely by bike, the city has been continuously upgrading its bikeways
In addition to building bikeways and bike routes, Vienna. is also interested in providing
an even greater number of bike parking racks.
To support e.g. building owners and the business community in offering more bike
parking space, the installation of racks, bike boxes or other bike parking facilities is
subsidised with up to 350.
In the next few years, special attention is to be paid on shopping traffic by bike
Public Transport and NMT
The city of Vienna is designed aiming at a walk friendly environment.
Strategies like lowering of curbs so that the wheelchair users can cross the streets
easily.
Right of way has been redesigned so as to make the sidewalks at least two meters
wide.
The traffic lights are phased as pedestrian friendly, decreasing the waiting time less
than 40 seconds until the next green signal.
Addressing the weaker road users, equitable road space, will be coming to fore in the
coming years.
Instead of individual designation and bifurcation of lanes for cyclists, car drivers,
pedestrians and public transport, co-existence to be focused upon.
Passenger Cars
The park-and-ride concept is implemented to reduce the avalanche of cars entering
the city centre, facilities are created where commuters can switch to public transport
to enter the city.
In coming years, a co-operation with the Federal Province of Lower Austria will lead to
the construction of additional park-and-ride facilities near regional train stations in
municipalities adjoining Vienna.
Around 1,800 new parking slots in Viennese park-and-ride facilities were planned for
2009.
The citys specific bottleneck was not congestion but the limited parking space is
being tackled by space management and urban planning. The average parking
duration has decreased markedly, which above all eases business and shopping traffic.
In conjunction with other measures, parking space management moreover reduces
passenger car traffic.
Environment and Traffic safety
Noise abatement measures conducted in recent years have already resulted in
successful endeavours.
While approx. 72 % of the Viennese citizens felt that traffic noise was a disturbance in
1998, the said population decreased to slightly under 67 % in 2006.
Introducing more clean and green modes will help in achieving the ambitious
objectives of Viennas climate protection programme.
Viennas long-term goal is Vision Zero a vision that aims for an ethical approach to
traffic without fatal accidents
Over the past 25 years, the number of persons injured or killed in road traffic has
decreased remarkably.
Despite this, Vienna has reinforced its efforts to continuously improve the situation: in
the future, the technical surveillance of speed limits and red light crossings is to be
further stepped up and more studies are to be done to improve the safety of weaker
road users which include pedestrians and cyclists.
Environment and Traffic safety

Development of CO2 Emissions

Reduction of fatalities from

1993 to 2007
Introduction Of Smart mobility
ITS Vienna region is a route planner which searches using combination of different
transport modes- public, car, bike or walk. It is advantageous in comparison to the
conventional planners as it gives real time information to the users updated to show
the current traffic conditions, delays.
This route planner indicates and combines different modes informing about real time
parking lot availabilities and park and ride facilities.
As of may 2009 it has been implemented in Vienna and lower Austria
There is an application and a website for searching fast and safe bike routes , bike
parking sites and city bike stations which has been implemented since 2006
To render car use in Vienna in a more environmentally friendly manner, the city
supports car sharing and pools e.g. the project compano, a car ride exchange ties
in smoothly with the transport policy of the city.
