Adverse Torsional interaction is less compared to that caused by

fixed series compensation.

Potential of adverse interconnections exists only if radial operation of
hvdc link connected to a turbine generator is anticipated.
2 ways to overcome Torsional interconnections :
1. Modification of the converter control
2. Providing sub synchronous damping controller(SSDC)
This method is feasible only if modification does not affect the usual
functions of the controller during normal and abnormal conditions.
Requirement of controller- To ensure satisfactory transient response
during
i. DC line faults
ii. Recovery from AC line faults.
Whenever the first torsional mode of the turbine generator ha
frequency higher than 15 Hz the TI problem is minimal and can be
solved with minor modifications of existing converter controls.
This method is more flexible.
Input signal can be taken from the rotor speed or bus frequency.
The signal representing the frequency of the generator internal
voltage can be synthesized from Voltage & current measurements.
SSDC can be designed based on:
Narrow bandwidth approach.
Wide bandwidth approach.
Narrow bandwidth approach
Sharp band pass filters are used to isolate torsional mode and has
advantage of minimizing the interference with existing HVDC
converter controls.
Requires precise tuning in the field which may pose problem.
It can also introduce negative damping at frequencies on either side
of frequency for which filter is tuned.
Output of SSDC goes directly to firing angle controller to
modulate delay angle .
In designing SSDC Ensure that it does not amplify characteristic or
non-characteristic harmonics.
Torsional interconnections with MTDC system
Major conclusion of the study are:
1. Rectifier on current control contributes to maximum negative
damping of torsional modes , when generator is connected to
rectifier terminal.
The torsional mode with Lowest frequency is most affected.
Voltage controller at the inverter contributes to the negative
damping .
Torsional modes are better damped when the rectifier is chosen as
VST(voltage setting terminal) as opposed to the case when inverter is
chosen as VST.
Torsional interconnections with VSC-HVDC
Recent study of SSR with VSC based HVDC transmission systems are
considered detailed system models and various operating modes of
converter.
The investigations carried out based on linear analusis and non
linear transient simulation.
The damping torque analysis IGE (induction generator effect) is
neglected.
Assumption helps to speed up computation of damping torque.
Decrement factor ()-> defined as negative of the real past of eigen
value can also be computed from damping torque analysis.
= m + e
e = contribution from electrical system.
m = contribution from mechanical system
Conclusions based on investigation of sub-
synchronous resonance with VSC based HVDC
transmission system
Dc voltage control of VSC near generator results in better damping of
torsional modes.
Constant power control of rectifier station close to the generator
contributes small negative damping.
Constant power control of inverter station close to the generator can
destabilize the torsional modes in a narrow range of lower
frequencies.
The problem of TI with VSC-HVDC is minor except when the converter
is operated as an inverter with constant power control.
Converters in VSC-HVDC also operate as STATCOM, the provision of
SSDC can help damp torsional oscillations caused by a series
compensated AC line connected in parallel.
