BIBI HAJRA AND STATUS OF

WOMEN IN ISLAM
The status of Women in Islam can not be doubtful
as Islam has given privileges and rights to women
which they never had in any other religions. But
still nowadays the most frequent attack on Islamic
values and morals is to question the status of
women in Islam. The status of women in Islam is
unique and matchless does not have any
resemblance with previous religions or systems. Let
us talk about the status of women in Islam with
view to the history of Safa and Marwa. Safa and
Marwa are two hills near to Holy Kaaba in city
Makkah. Muslims who perform
the Hajj and Umrahshould run between the hills of
Safa and Marwa. This is in the memory of a
mothers sacrifice for her son.
The great woman was Bibi Hajra (May ALLAH
Almighty be pleased with her). She was the wife of
Hazrat Ibraheem (A.S). Bibi Hajra was the Mother
of Hazrat Ismaeel (A.S). Bibi Hajras sacrifice took
place when She was left alone with her baby
Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) in the valley of city Makkah all
for the sake of ALLAH Almighty.
Verse 14:37 of Holy Quran;
Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in
an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our
Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make
hearts among the people incline toward them and
provide for them from the fruits that they might be
grateful.
When Bibi Hajra became thirsty and Her Hazrat Ismaeel (AS)
child also became thirsty. She started looking at her baby
tossing in agony. She left him, for she could not bear looking at
him, and found that the mountain of Safa was the nearest
mountain. She stood on it and started looking at the valley
enthusiastically so that she might see somebody, but She could
not see anyone. Then she descended from Safa and when she
reached the valley, she ran in the valley like a person in trouble
and distress, till she crossed the valley and reached Marwa
where she stood and started looking and expecting to see some
water or someone help, but she could not see anybody. She
repeated that act (running between Safa and Marwa) seven
times. This act of running between the hills of Safa and Marwa
by Bibi Hajra was so much loved by ALLAH Almighty that
ALLAH has made running between Safa and Marwa obligatory
for every man and Woman who performs Umrah and Hajj.
Verse 2:158 of Holy Quran;
Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the
symbols of ALLAH. So whoever makes Hajj to the
House or performs umrah there is no blame
upon him for walking between them. And
whoever volunteers good then indeed, ALLAH is
appreciative and Knowing.
Today we drink from Zamzam water and it is ever
flowing water, when you go for Umrah and Hajj.
What a beautiful example of Status of women in
Islam!!
