PRINCIPLE
It operate on the principle of Faradays law of
electromagnetic induction that states that when a current
carrying conductor moves through stationary transverse
magnetic field, emf is induced between the conductor and
the magnetic field.
The emf induced is proportional to the relative velocity
between the conductor and the magnetic field.
PRINCIPLE
In electromagnetic flow meter, electrically conductive
flowing liquid works as the conductor.
The induced voltage expressed as,
E = CBLv
or
v = E CBL
PRINCIPLE

Where,
v = velocity of the conductor in m/s
E = induced voltage in volts
B = magnetic field in Wb/m2
L = length of conductor in m
C = dimensional constant
PRINCIPLE
The equation of continuity to convert a velocity
measurement to volumetric flow rate is,
Q = vA
Q = volumetric flow rate
v = fluid velocity
A = cross-section area of flow meter
PRINCIPLE
Now,
Q = EA / CBL
where, A,C,B,L are conctant
Q = KE
Thus, the induced voltage E is directly proportional and
linear with volumetric flow rate.
Construction & Working
Construction & Working
It consists of an electrically insulated or non-conducting
pipe like fiber glass with a pair of electrodes mounted
opposite to each other and flush with the inside walls of
its pipe and with magnetic coil mounted around the pipe
so that a magnetic field is generated in a plane mutually
perpendicular to the axis of the flow meter body and to
the plane of the electrodes. If metal pipe is used, an
electrically insulated linear is provided to the initial of the
pipe.
Construction & Working
The flow liquid acts like a conductor. The length L is the
distance between the electrodes. It equals the pipe
diameter.
As the liquid passes through the pipe section, it passes
through the magnetic field set up by the magnet coils
inducing the voltage in the liquid that is detected by the
electrodes mounted in the pipewall.
Construction & Working
The amplitude of the induced voltage is proportional to
the velocity of the flowing liquid.
The magnetic coils can be energized by AC or DC
voltage. Now a day pulses DC is used. Time magnetic
coils are periodically energized.
Advantages
They are available in large pipe sizes and capacities.
No distortion and no loss or no pressure drops.
Fast speed of response.
Output voltage is linearly proportional to the input flow
rate.
Easy to install and maintain.
It can be used as bi-directional meter.
Disadvantages
It can be used for measuring the flow rates of conductive
liquids only.
It cannot be used for metering liquids that have low
conductivity.
