Velocity Modeling Using 2nd Order Polynomial

Function
2nd order Polynomial Function
This is the basic time-depth conversion methodology. It makes use of the twt and depth information from checkshot, calculates
velocities at wach checkpoint depth and uses this velocity to convert data from time to depth or depth to time. The following are
the various stages:
Make a plot of time and depth in excel spreadsheet for every well/s with checkshot data.
Plot the time and depth information from all the checkshot wells on a single pane in excel spread sheet
Insert a trend line on the plot and make it to be a 2nd order polynomial trend line. This comes with a corresponding 2nd order
polynomial equation
To transfer this equation to petrel, two options exist:
Right click on any map in Petrel and go to calculator
Using the depth as Y in the equation, put the time map as X in the equation and compute for the Y(depth)

OR
On the same excel sheet, at specific time interval, like every 5ms to about 5000ms, calculate the corresponding depth values using
the 2nd order Polynomial equation. This gives you new time and depth data. Open the Make Velocity model tab under Geophysics
in the Processes Pane of Petrel, under Base, copy all the time values in the new time-depth data and paste there. Under
correction, copy the depth data in the new time-depth data and paste there. Under Model, use V=Vo=Vint; Vo:Correction
Constant. This will be selected for every data point as seen below. Then click apply. The velocity model will be built under Model
Pane. You can then convert anything from time to depth or vice versa by right clicking on the object and clicking on Domain
Convert By Active Velocity Model. The velocity model must have to be active before you right click on any object
T-Z Plots for each well

Trend Line (2nd order Polynomial)

Y in the equation signifies the depth(could be depth 2nd order Polynomial equation
map) while X signifies the time (could be time map)
Use the surface calculator in Petrel and type the equation
the generate corresponding depth map for each time
map as described above
Using Make Velocity Model in Petrel
A stated earlier, at specific time intervals, say 5ms to about 5000ms,
estimate the corresponding depth values as seen in the spread sheet below

Applied Polynomial equation to

generate depth values for each time
value

You can then input this generated spreadsheet into

Petrel as described beolow
This is a time map

value of the second
column i.e 5ms
