INTRODUCTION:
Ring balance belongs to mechanical displacement type
pressure measuring device i.e., a Force Balance
Pressure Gauge with Mechanical Transducer.

The ring balance differential manometer, which is also

known as ring balance, is a variation of the U tube
manometer.

Normally used to measure pressure difference

developed by flow sensors like orifice, venturi meter,
pitot tube etc.
APPARATUS:

A tube made up of polythene or any

other light or transparent material is
bent into the form of a ring known as
annular ring.

The interior of the ring body is divided into two

compartments by a partition in the upper portion and
liquid approximately filling the lower half .
APPARATUS:

The ring is balanced on a knife edge at its center

so that it is free to rotate
A mass is attached to compensate the difference
in pressure to the lower part of the ring which is
known as Counter Weight.
Each compartment normally is connected to an
independent source of pressure by means of
flexible tubing which does not sensibly impede the
rotation of the ring body
PRINCIPLE:

This device depends on the angular rotation under a

applied pressure difference of the ring.

The movement of the ring is transmitted to an

indicating pointer moving over a scale graduated in
millimetres of mercury by mechanical linkage.
Schematic Diagram:
WORKING:
When the fluid enters in the ring due to the
pressure difference, the ring will rotate through
some angle with vertical.

The mass attached at the lower part will rotate in

opposite direction to balance the torque .

According to the angle of mass link with vertical

the calibrated instrument shows the pressure
difference on the scale.
WORKING:
T=(P1-P2)Ar & T= mgrsin
(P1-P2)Ar = mgRsin
P1-P2=(mgR/Ar)sin
where
P1-P2 =differential pressure
T=turning moment
=angle about its center
r=mean radius of the annular ring
m= mass attached at the lower part
R=radius of the point of application of mass
A=area of cross section of annular ring
ADVANTAGES:
The large advantage of the ring balance
manometer lies in the long-term accuracy of the
measurement.
By changing the counter weight used, small as
well as large pressure difference can easily
measured as pointer will respond accordingly.
Of the various manometric fluids used, mercury
has many advantages like low vapour pressure,
non-sticky nature, and wide temperature range
from -20 degree C to 350 degree Celsius.
DISADVANTAGES:
The device installation and maintenance is known
to be quite expensive.
Due to mechanical linkages used in device some
error will be there in measurement.
High pressure range for measurement is 1700mm
of H20 and the upper limit of speed is 60m/sec so
can not be used beyond it.
High density of Mercury is disadvantageous for
low differential pressure measurements.
APPLICATIONS:
This is used very small measuring range between -
25 to 50 Pa are needed, typical areas of application
for the ring balance are as follows:
Buildings automations.
Clean-room technology.
Furnace and/or Boiler construction.
Pressure difference developed by Flow Sensors.
Chemical Industries.
NUMERICALS:
Q1 . A ring balance apparatus having following characteristics:
mean radius of annular ring =10mm
mass attached at lower part = 0.5 kg
radius of point of application of mass=3 cm
radius of cross section of the tube = 5cm
if during the measurement across a stream flow ,mass
rotates at an angle of 30 degree about vertical axis ,find out the
pressure difference across it.
solution:
given r = 10mm so area =3.14(5)2=78.5cm2
m =0.5 kg
R=3cm
Torque =(p1-p2)Ar
NUMERICALS:

Turning moment=mgRsin
so
(p1-p2)Ar=mgRsin
Pressure difference =
(0.5*9.8*sin30*3*10-
2)/0.785*10-6*10*10-3

pressure difference=9.36*10 5 Pa.

NUMERICALS:
Q2: For the given characteristics of ring balance
mean radius of annular ring =12mm
mass attached at lower part = 0.4 kg
radius of point of application of mass=2cm
radius of cross section of tube=4cm
find out the velocity at the other end if the velocity at
first end of ring balance if 40m/sec and angle of rotation of mass
is 45 degree.
Solution:
Pressure difference=0.0102*105 Pa
According to Bernoullis theorem=(V22-V12)/2g
V2=(0.0204*105+400)(1/2)
V2=14.42 m/sec
