Pressure Shear Plate

Impact on Granular August 7th, 2017

Boron Carbide
Motivation
Boron carbide tested due to excellent strength and low density

Granular flow occurs in in both natural and engineering

phenomenon: planetary impact, armor protection

Grain size, pressure, and shear strain rate influence granular flow

Define and characterize granular phenomenon experimentally

Summary
Successfully completed one pressure shear plate impact experiment
on granular boron carbide
Measured shear stresses in the granular flow at around 270 Mpa,
normal stresses at around 1.74 Gpa, and shear rates of 2x104 s-1.
At high rates, increasing the pressure increases the shear stress
sustained by the granular material.
Pressure effects are stronger than strain rate effects.
Perform more experiments and examine particle size distribution and
shape distribution effects.
