What is Smart City?

A Smart City should have:-

Adequate water supply

Assured electricity supply
Sanitation, including solid waste management
Efficient urban mobility and public transport
Affordable housing, especially for the poor
Robust IT connectivity and digitalisation
Good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation
Sustainable environment
Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly
Health and education

Some Smart City Features

LED Lights
Book Parking Through Your Smartphone App
Digital libraries
Fully Mechanised Waste Management
Interactive Digital Panels
Smart Toilets
Smart Buildings

2
Mobility

Mobility is the ability of a product/service provider to allow

constant travel within a pre-defined geographic region that
allows the consumer to still receive applicable services, for
example, Uber leverages mobility as a service by allowing its
users to travel freely within supported regions while still
providing on demand ride-sharing capabilities.

3
Transportation

Transportation is the act of moving something from one place to

another. Modes of transportation include air, rail, road, water, cable,
pipeline, space. Transport is important because it enables trade
between people, which is essential for the development
of civilizations.

4
Transportation as a Service(TaaS)

Transportation as a Service is a change from personally owned

modes of transportation and towards mobility solutions that are
consumed as a service. It combines all modes of transportation,
from brand new cars to taxis, buses, trains and bike share into a
single mobile service, removing the hassle of planning and one-off
payments.

5
Advantages of TaaS over traditional models of transport

It does not focus on building new vehicles or operating transport itself

It is cheaper
It is convenient
Reduced emissions
Better customer service
Easier payment methods
The option to select the type of vehicle

Autonomous Cars: The Future Of Mobility

An autonomous car is an unmanned ground vehicle that is capable

of sensing its environment and navigating without human input.
Autonomous cars use a variety of techniques to detect their
surroundings, such as radar, laser light, GPS, odometry, computer
vision. . Many automobile manufacturers and technology companies
have announced plans or are rumoured to develop autonomous
vehicles, including Tesla, General Motors, WeMo, Apple, and Local
Motors.

8
Impact of autonomous vehicles

Autonomous vehicles will allow the public to use the roads in low
cost-per-mile, self navigating vehicles to a preferred destination at a
significantly lower cost than current taxi and ride sharing prices. The
vehicles would have a large impact on the quality of life in urban
areas and form a critical part of the future of transportation, while
benefiting the traveller, the environment, and even other sectors
such as healthcare.

9
Conclusion
Research safer and more efficient ways to implement new
technology in passenger vehicles
Encourage use of mass transit in urban areas through government
funding and community planning
Promote autonomous vehicles
Promote governance, transparency, quality service and improved
energy system
Identify needs of citizens to improve the quality of life, using cost-
benefit criteria
The balanced development of cities based on the wishes of the citizens is
what makes it smart
