Milk Plant Chandigarh was established in the year 1962 by
Government of Punjab to provide hygienically prepared milk and milk
products to the people of Chandigarh. Later on, In 1979 the activity of
supplying milk was shifted from this plant to milk plant Mohali.
Production of Ice cream was started at this plant with substantially
enhanced capacity to capture the Ice Cream market in the tricity of
Chandigarh, Mohali & Panchkula.
At present the unit is involved in Production of Tetra Pak products
(Milk, Fermented Milk & Fruit Drink) in 200 ml & 1000 ml packing,
different varieties of Ice Cream & indigenous sweets like Milk Cake,
Kaju Pinni and sugar free Peda & Milk Cake. The products from other
sister plant like Ghee, Table Butter, Processed Cheese and fresh
products like paneer, kheer, curd etc are also marketed by this plant.
Different Units of Company are described below:-

RAC Unit
Mechanical Unit
Electrical Unit
Boiler Unit
Cold Storage
Responsible for identifying all machines requiring maintenance,
preparing and execution of preventive maintenance schedule and executing
maintenance throughout the plant.
Monitoring, controlling, maintenance of machinery and equipment to
ensure all time availability of serviceable machines and equipment for
producing quality products.
To Ensure proper supply of potable water and soft water wherever
required in the plant.
To identify and organize periodic calibration and inspection of
measuring and test equipment in the Plant coming under his preview.
To ensure maintenance, authentication and up gradation of all required
records pertaining to engineering section.
To control and manage the Refrigeration plant activities which include
regulating the temperature and pressure of various equipments like
compressor, Deep freezer, high and low pressure receivers etc.
Major responsibility is to manage the temperature and pressure of various
equipments at different times. Note down the readings and evaluate their
difference and make daily report of the same.

A compressor is a mechanical device that increases the
pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. An air compressor is a
specific type of gas compressor. Types of compressor used in
our plant are
1. Booster Compressor
2. Screw type Compressor
A common accessory used on many refrigeration systems is the liquid
receiver. It is basically a storage vessel designed to hold excess refrigerant
not in circulation. Refrigeration systems exposed to varying heat loads, or
systems utilizing a condenser flooding valve to maintain a minimum head
pressure during low ambient temperatures, will need a receiver to store
excess refrigerant. Types of Receiver used in plant are:
1. High Pressure receiver
2. Low Pressure receiver
The purpose of a condenser in the cycle of compression refrigeration is to
change the hot gas being discharged from the compressor to a liquid prepared
for use in the evaporator. The condenser accomplishes this action by the
removal of sufficient heat from the hot gas, to ensure its condensation at the
pressure available in the condenser. The heat is shifted to another medium, like
water or air, to cool the condenser
Cooling towers may either use the evaporation of water to remove process
heat and cool the working fluid to near the wet-bulb air temperature or, in
the case of closed circuit dry cooling towers, rely solely on air to cool the
working fluid to near the dry-bulb air temperature.
Ice bank tanks are one of the most widely used and adored materials which
are used for the purpose of preserving liquid food items for much longer
period of time in a healthy and hygienic manner. These IBT tanks are
generally used in the dairies for the preservation of milk for longer duration
of time.
The basic working principle of a freezer is evaporation. When a liquid
evaporates it causes the surrounding area to cool. A vapor compression
cycle is used in most freezers. In this cycle, a circulating refrigerant enters a
compressor as low-pressure vapor at or slightly above the temperature of
the freezer interior.
Thermosyphon or priority receiver as it is sometimes called is a buffer
capacity for constant refrigerant supply to the oil filter for regular cooling of
the oil circulating in the system. Refrigeration Pressure Vessels Purpose:
1. Storage of liquid refrigerant. 2. Separation of liquid and vapor.
3. Separation of oil and refrigerant (vapor or liquid).
Control Panel consists of a software supplied by Mycom, the company
which supplied all the compressor and the receivers. All the working of
components is controlled by this software in control panel.
Troubleshooting problems in refrigerators.
We are provided with the old refrigerators that no longer works. We have to
repair them and keep them in running conditions. Faculty members also
helps us with the project.
The Vapor compression cycle is used in most household refrigerators . It
consists of 4 basic process
1. isentropic compression
2. Const. pr. Heat rejection
3. Iso-entalphic expansion
4. Const. pressure heat absorption
Frost Developed in freezer compartment
Air has moisture in it and when it comes in contact with the cold
evaporator coil frost is developed around evaporator coils preventing
further heat transfer.
Defrosting is a technique which regularly defrost the evaporator in a
refrigerator. It heats the cooling element for short period of time and melt
the frost that has formed on it.
Defrost system consists of three main components:
1. Timer
2. Small bimetal thermostat
3. Hot rod
It keeps track of the compressor run time. It is a motorized device that
opens and closes several electrical contacts. One connect the defrost heater
circuit and another to the cooling system.
If the timer is not working properly, it can be manually corrected by using
a flat head screw driver and rotating it in clockwise direction until a click
sound is heard.
It consists of two small contact strips that detects the temperature change
and open and closes the circuit, for the flow to electriticity.
Its continuity can be checked by checking its resistance. If it shows
infinite resistance then it is time to replace it.
Heating rods are inserted along the length of evaporator.
At the required intervals the refrigeration system is stopped from
operation and the heating rod is switched on to provide the necessary heat.
