If the pump is manufactured in according of API 610, there is no need to
change in the pump design to use 2xAPI loads.
The pump vendor has to meet all the API 610 requirements and piping loads
shall be checked in accordance of appendix F.
In the appendix F para 1.2, it is very clear to use piping loads up to
2xAPI table 2.1 without consulting the pump vendor.

As far a what is different on a 2XAPI pump, one has to examine what F.1.2. says
"...ensure that any pump casing distortions are within the vendors design
dcriteria (see 2.2.8) and that the displacement of the pump shaft will be less
than 380E-6 m. The castings and forging that I've seen for pump casing can best be
described as hefty. Therefore, the limiting criteria is on the shaft deflection.
Generally, to decrease deflection of the shaft, a stiffer base plate is required (thicker
plate or stiffeners added) because the motor and the pump usually do not sit on the
same infinitely rigid base. The concrete pedestal is only rigid in resisting forces, not
moments - the metal base plate must resist the moments. Therefore, nothing is done
to the pump itself.
For higher multipliers of API, some beefing up of the pump _may_ need to be done.
It's probably best to ask for the highest API multiplier on a pump that we can get just
by stiffening the baseplate. That is likely a whole lot cheaper the added steel, pipe,
and engineered pipe supports required to make some systems with 1XAPI load limits
work.
Since this is just my opinion and there is not real reference on how to handle 2XAPI
pumps, I would strongly suggest that you come to an agreement with the vendor
on this, being especially explicit on how to handle Appendix F.

You asked what on the pump package will change if we call for 2 times API 610 allowables:
1. Nothing, if the Vendor's skid design is already designed for this (some are)
2. If the skid was designed to meet the shaft deflections of API 610 8 ed para 3.3.6 with the MYc
and MZc moments applied based on 1 times the table 2-1 figures then the vendor will have to stiffen
the skid because MYc and Mzc will now be bigger as a result of the two times table 2-1 requirement
3. You asked how the vendor will understand App F for the 2 times case: nobody but a vendor can
answer that; Appendix F looks mathematical so there should be no room for vendors to interpret -
just fill in the figures. We need to ask a more specific question than this - it is too vague.
4. Note that all pump pressure casings must be designed for two times the Table 2-1 values -
(Para 2.2.8) this is a pressure casing issue and we get this even if we dont calling for 2 times table
2-1 allowables. The table 2-1 allowables are intended to limit shaft movement not pressure
casing distortion.

Equipment Engineer View- Excerpts
As an equipment engineer I would like to offer some comments and relate a lesson learned
on piping allowable loads on equipment nozzles.
From the equipment engineer's viewpoint it sometimes seems like Pipe Stress Engineers
are always asking for higher allowable loads on equipment nozzles. If the Equipment Engineer
can't get the vendor to agree to higher loads there is an implication that the equipment is somehow
shoddy or cheap.
If we continue to increase loads on equipment nozzles we may saved time or cost in
design but we may well be passing problems on to our customers in the form or
operating problems and increased maintenance costs. Nevertheless, I do believe there is room for
compromise.
A few years ago I had an experience where Pipe Stress revised the nozzle loads on a piece of equipment
about six times with widely varying changes each time. The equipment vendor and I grew tired of reviewing
these changes.
On the next job, adding an additional reactor train , I was much less cooperative. After one round of
increased loads I drew the line and told Pipe Stress that they would have to make the piping work. They did.
Unfortunately, they made the piping to the pumps so long and flexible that it vibrated badly on start-up.
We had to fix the problem in the field with additional guides and dampeners..
My point here is that both sides, Piping and Mechanical, need to remain flexible (pardon the pun)
in resolving these design problems.

Lessons Learned-Plastic pump system
(KOL)
Description
For this project, Durco plastic pumps were specified. During detailed design
the allowable loads on the plastic pumps advised by the vendor were
exceptionally low causing additional stress work and special measures to anchor
the pipe adjacent to the pumps.
Context
Impact: Additional man-hours for stress work. Schedule was recovered.
Recommended Corrective Action: Ensure that sufficient hours are allowed for
stress calculations if plastic pumps are to be selected in favour of conventional
designs.
