 Boxing day 2004
The Tsunami that occurred on boxing day
2004 is believed to have killed more than
230,000 people across 14 countries, it is also
believed to be the deadliest Tsunami in
history.
 When it happened
It began at 7:59am local time on December 26
2004, when a 9.1-magnitude quake struck of
the northern tip of Sumatra in Indonesia.
 The Third Biggest Earthquake
Scientists say the earthquake was the third
biggest ever recorded, lasting up to 10
minutes and causing the earth to vibrate up to
1 centimetre.

 It also displaced an estimated 30 cubic

kilometres of water, unleashing a massive
Tsunami across the Indian ocean.
 Quake
The quake occurred in a region where two of
the Earths tectonic plates push together,
forcing one under the other causing and
Earthquake that caused a disasters Tsunami.
 30 Meters

Waves of up to 30 meters
were recorded as the
Tsunami swept ache, the
hardest hit region of
Indonesia.
 After The Earthquake
Around 2 hours after the Earthquake waves
reached Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
An hour later waves reached the Maldives.
7 hours later the Tsunami was observed in
Mauritius and along the east coast of Africa.
The effects were seen as far away Antarctica
and North America.
 The Hardest Hit
Indonesia was the hardest hit by the Tsunami
was at least 168,000 killed.
Walls of water smashed into Mins Island
which sits on the Northern end of Sumatra.
35,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka 18,000
died in India.
8,000 died in Thailand.
 Thousands
Thousands of foreign travellers were killed in
the disaster, including 26 Australians, all but
two of whom died in Thailand.
 Wake Of The Disaster
In the wake of the disaster more that $14 billion in
did was pledged by the international community.
Prime minister John Howard pledged $1 billion overt
five years to re-build Tsunami, hit areas of Indonesia
in the single largest aid contribution ever by
Australia.
The government also pledged aid to other
affected countries, while public and corporate
donors contributed hundreds of millions of
dollars to those affected.
 How It Happened
1. The Tsunami formed when an Earthquake
vertically shifted the seabed by serval meters,
displacing hundreds of kilometres of sea water.
2. Large waves began ripping across the ocean,
away from the earthquakes epicentre.
3. In deep water, the Tsunami moved at speeds of
up to 800 km/hr. When it approached shallower
coastal Ares it slowed down but increased in
height.
