PREFACE
Forty five years ago, a small lamp of knowledge was lit, to be exact, on August 21,
1969 to inaugurate the college, named after the memory of Late Sri Velagapudi
Ramakrishna , the pioneer industrialist of Andhra who gave away 28.74 acres of
land and buildings therein for the location of the college at Nagaram in Repalle taluk of
Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.

Forty five years ago, our college consisted of a few humble class rooms, laboratories,
a small library, an office and a Principals room. The college had grown from strength
to strength under the loving care and liberal monetary help by Smt. Rajeswary
Ramakrishnan, daughter of Late Sri V.Ramakrishna.

Today, the College consists of a main building, sophisticated laboratories and class
rooms, a beautiful library , Computer Centre, Language Lab, administrative block,
staff rooms, Gym and indoor stadium, seminar hall, open Air theatre, non-resident
centre, waiting rooms for girls and boys, guest house, cycle sheds, Bank building,
Athletic track, wide play ground, hostels for boys and girls and residential quarters for
staff in the midst of gardens and green foliage.

CURRICULAR ASPECTS

1. Program options
From 01-11-2011 our institution conferred Autonomous Status, P.G Courses are under
the purview of affiliated university (Acharya Nagarajuna University, Guntur)
Before 01-11-2011 the college affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur.
We offer 4 combinations of subjects at UG level for students of science and two for
arts. The college conducts M.Sc., course in Chemistry.

2. Curriculum
The faculty members in the department meet under the chairmanship of the Head of
the Department keeping in the view of relevance employability global competence and
quality concerns; they designed the curriculum basing on the UGC requirements and
curriculum prescribed by the affiliating university.
The feedback of academic peers, industries, students and alumni is reviewed and the
draft curriculum is revised based on the feedbacks. The curriculum is discussed and
designed in the meeting of the Board of Studies. The experts from industry, research
bodies, civil society and subject experts serve as members in the Board of Studies and
their valuable suggestions enrich the development of curriculum. The suggestions are
also incorporated in curriculum design.

CURRICULAR ASPECTS
3. Curricular , Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
Semester system of education is followed for UG and PG courses. The college provides
opportunity for qualitative higher education. In addition, co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities, practical training through project work and development of writing skills through
periodical tests , Seminars, group discussions etc ., are developed in the students. NSS, NCC and
NGC play an important role to attain self discipline and to inculcate social, cultural values and
patriotism.

4. Relevance to local needs


Programmes of inter/multi disciplinary and restructured technical career oriented courses have
so far been introduced to benefit the educationally and economically backward students of this
locality.

5. Autonomy
The college enjoys autonomy with regard to conduct of internal, term and pre-public
examinations and internal valuation of records.

6. Review and Redesign


The goals and objectives of the institution are periodically reviewed and feedback from academic
peers and employees is used in the initiation, review and redesign of programmes.
TEACHING, LEARNING & EVALUATION
1.Academic Schedule
The academic Calendar is prepared by the Institution. Work is allotted to each
teacher as per U.G.C. norms. Annual plans are prepared and teaching diaries,
question banks, lesson synopsis are maintained by all the lecturers. Monitoring
of annual academic plans and teaching diaries is done by Head of the department
on the last day of the week and Principal in the first week of every month.

2. Students admission
Students are admitted into different courses of our college on the basis of their
academic records in the qualifying examination and reservation policy of the
State Government.

3. Assessment after admission


After admission of students into different courses, their knowledge and skills
are assessed and provision is made for need based bridge courses.

4. Remedial Coaching
The college conducts remedial coaching to the academically backward students, before and after the
working hours of the college. The funds allotted by the UGC under each plan for remedial courses is
fully utilized.

5. Teaching Practices
The teaching system in our college creates cordial relations between students and teachers. The
college makes an earnest effort to provide in depth teaching learning experience to students as well as
teachers by organizing group discussions, seminars, symposia, debates and Quiz programmes and by
giving challenging assignments.

Socio-economic surveys and visits to factories, laboratories and places of historical, archaeological and
environmental importance are organized as frequently as possible.

6. Appointment of Lecturers
Appointment of Lecturers is done as per procedures laid down by the State Government and Acharya
Nagarjuna University. The college management has taken steps to fill up the backlog vacancies also, in
order to maintain the reservation policy of the recruitment. The college has the freedom and the
resources to appoint and pay temporary teaching staff.

7. Adequacy and competency
The college has adequate and efficient members to meet the requirements of the teaching
schedules and the need of students in accordance with UGC and A.P. Govt. norms.
There are 220 working days in the college and 190 days of teaching in the year. The work
load per week per teacher is 20 hours.

8. Self appraisal and Feedback


Performance of the Lecturers is evaluated through the self appraisal form prescribed by
the University Grants Commission. A feedback from students is also obtained by the
Principal about the performance of lecturers and the same is analyzed by the Principal and
Correspondent and discussed with the concerned lecturers for remedial measures.

9. Tutorial System
In the tutorial system, the teacher-student ratio is 1:20 . The teacher monitors the progress
of each of those students.

10. Use of New Technology


The lecture method is supplemented by the use of A/V tools like OHP, LCD projector and E-
Board.

11. Higher Qualifications & Experience
At present we have lecturers with Ph.D. and M. Phil awards. All together there
are 10 staff members with Higher qualifications.
Some of our staff members have participated in national seminars, work-shops,
orientation and refresher courses and enriched their knowledge . The non-teaching
staff are sufficiently experienced. They have all the skills and abilities which their
duties demand.

12. Awards and Rewards


Sri K. Uma vara murthy received best teacher award from A.P. State Govt.
Dr. M.V.Subba Rao received National level award Bharat Jyothi for his services to
society .
Some of our staff members are the resource persons for refresher courses and gave
talks in A.I.R.
A.P. History congress has selected Dr. V.K. Mohan as President of the local history
section held at Nagarjuna Sagar in January 2005.

13. Evaluation Methodology
a) Examinations
Under autonomy status, the college opts semester pattern. Each academic year has two
semesters. Each semester has two mid term examinations, to assess the academic performance
of the students. At the end of the each semester, semester end examination will be conducted.

The mid term examination answer scripts are valued by the concerned lecturer. The semester
end examination scripts are valued by external examiners from other colleges.

Examinations dates are given in the academic calendar. Examination time table is displayed on
students notice board well in advance.

Syllabus, Questions paper pattern are communicated to the students well in advance.

Results are made available to the teachers for analysis and necessary action.

Results are declared normally within 30 days, as for as possible.

The schedule tests and term end examinations procedure and important dates will be
communicated to each student at the beginning of the academic year through Academic
Calendar supplied to each one.

In addition to the examinations, slip tests, debates, quiz competitions and asking
questions in class room are also used to assess the academic standards of each student.

Students attendance is regularly recorded and the percentage is recorded month-wise.

For P.G. Courses, the method of Internal and External evaluation is followed as per the University
rules.
The student is required to satisfy the minimum in both internal and external valuations separately.
The internal evaluation is done on the basis of best two out of three tests conducted.
RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION
1. Research:
College has a research cell it acts as support and enabling system for faculty to pursue research
work successfully along with class room teaching.

College research committee has been propagating research culture among the students for the
past 5years.

Institute promotes research culture by allowing the faculty to actively participate in the UGC
sponsored FDP programme, Minor and Major Research Projects. The college allows the
research members to utilize the institutional infrastructure facilities.

The management has always provided financial support to different research activities. The
departments engaged in research activities are given extra funds.

The college organizes seminars/ workshops and provide on duty leave, T.A / D.A to the faculty
members to attend / participate in such programs.

The faculty members are encouraged to pursue research. The faculty members are granted
study leave under FDP scheme of UGC to complete their M.Phil / PhD as per UGC guidelines.

Advance money for sanctioned projects funded by UGC, DST etc. so that there is no

Good Library with Large Number of Books

For the publication of research work in the international journals, the management
collaborated with six international Journals according to their subject areas.

All the science departments are provided computer systems.

The college has taken efforts to attract researchers of eminence and academicians to
visit the campus and interact with teachers and students. The college invited the
eminent scholars for the seminars, workshops, guest lecturers and eminent
scientist from IIT for DST INSPIRE programme.

2. Consultancy
a) The departments of Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Commerce and Computers science offer
consultancy in various fields of specialization free of cost for the benefit of the public of this
backward region. The free services offered are water analysis, soil analysis, income tax
assessment , etc.
b) The department of History interacts with the High School, College students of this region
through artifacts of the college Archaeological museum and thus provides awareness on
the greatness of Indian culture to the students.

3. Extension:

Faculty and students are given orientation by the principal and senior faculty of the
college emphasizing on the ethics and core values of the institution in participating
Extension activities.

Our college NSS unit worked hard in laying link roads connecting Nagaram village with
surrounding villages and won the good will from the public.

In 1997 our college NSS unit got first place and won two lakhs prize money in
participating Janambhoomi programme by government of A.P.

Farmers weekly vegetables market was established by our college NSS unit in 1985. This
helps local farmers to market their products every week (Tuesday) in Nagaram.

The NSS unit also participated in several plantation programmes in and around nagaram
villages and government seashore forestation programme.

The NSS volunteers extended their social service in Krishna pushakar festival times. The
place allotted to penumudi river.

3. Extension:

Our NCC unit its a old unit established in 1970. Our cadets serve the society by
participating in programs like plantation, blood donation camps , volunteering in eye
camps and social festival events like Krishna pushakarams, Maha sivsratri thirunala, etc.

Ours is a cyclone prone area. Our college students participated in a number of cyclone
relief works and cyclone awareness programs. They participated in krishna river flood
relief works.

Our college students helped the police in conducting the elections smoothly and
maintaining law and order .

Red ribbon club was formed in 2008. The club participate in propaganda programs like
adult education cleanliness, hygienic conditions etc.

Asha programs are meant for to educate / create awareness among the public about HIV
virus/ AIDS propagation. The students members are active in this programe and also
participated in inter district / intra district programs.

3. Extension:

Our institution encourages to participate in various programmers like community


development, health and hygienic, aids, awareness, medical camps, blood donation camps,
environ awareness and trainings in disaster management.

The free medical camps conducted by the college it also promote college neighbourhood
network.

NGC (National Green Crops) take active part in conservation of environment and make it
clean and pollution free.

Effective waste management: Our College students periodically conduct a rally in order to
create an awareness of ill consequences of the use of plastic bags, warm culture, biogas etc.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES
Our college has excellent infrastructure facilities, basic one being the 28.74 acres of
land that is available to the college for future development.

1. Class Rooms
The total number of class rooms is 22. All the class rooms are provided with adequate
furniture, electric lights, good ventilation and few ceiling fans.

2. Laboratories
Our laboratories are fully equipped and efficiently maintained not only to reserve the
needs of students pursuing modern curricula but also to carry out research.

3. Auditorium
Named after main donor Smt. Rajeswary Ramakrishnan, our auditorium is spacious
enough to accommodate about 1000 audience. It is equipped with lights and A/V
equipment. This auditorium is a multipurpose venue suitable for seminars, cultural
programmes, lectures, music concerts , the staging of plays etc.

4. Open Air Theatre
We also have a large open air theatre enclosed by buildings on all four sides. It has a raised
platform with the statue of Saraswathi at the rear. Functions of a large scale like college day
celebrations, Health care meetings, etc, are usually organized here.

5. Staff Rooms
Most of the departments have separate staff rooms with all the essential amenities.

6. Waiting Rooms
Girl students have two spacious waiting rooms. Boys have one waiting room in addition to non-
student resident centre.

7. Guest House
We are having a guest house with two A.C. rooms and one dining hall. Most of the Government
personnel and VIPs to the college utilize this guest house - donated by Alumni of our college.

8. Workshop
We are having a well equipped workshop with staff members in-charge of it. This workshop
attends to the maintenance of water works, electrical and civil works.

9. New Buildings
A new Floor is under construction with the financial assistance of UGC.

10. Cycle-Sheds
Majority of our students are coming to the college by cycles. As such, we have cycle sheds
for boys and girls separately.

11. Library
The Library is located in the centre of the college campus. It contains 35,000 books. The
college subscribes 50 magazines and journals. Book Bank, INFLIBNET, OPAC, Clipping
section, Back volumes, open Access, Reference, museum, Net Centre, Scan, Print, copy
facilities are provided. A variety of programmes like Readers club, Quiz, Seminars, mock
assembly etc. are also held here.

12. Computer Center


There is a Computer Centre with E-Class Room and English language Lab in our college .
LAN, Wi-Fi and A/V equipment are provided.

13. Health Services


A health center is working in the college campus. Most of the committee members are
doctors and they conduct regular health checkup for students and staff. Our NSS and NCC
units are also conducting medical awareness camps in collaboration with government and
non-government organizations.

14. Physical Education
There are several good facilities for the students in sports and physical education, which
include two play grounds, Indore stadium, Gymnasium, Cricket pitch, and separate courts
for various sports. We have conducted state level and University level tournaments for
teachers and students. A memorial sports award is instituted to the best sportsman every
year. Our students won a number of prizes, trophies and rolling shields at State level and
National level in games and sports. Our former Physical Director Sri B.Seetharami Reddy
acted as coach and referee at ANU tournaments.

15. Staff Quarters


The Management has provided 22 staff quarters to its members. The staff members in
the quarters visit regularly the nearby hostels and guide the students round the clock.

16. Hostels
There are separate hostels for girls and boys. A 25 KVA Generator has been installed in
the hostel for uninterrupted power supply.

17. Museums
The Museums maintained by the departments of Zoology, Botany and History are excellent
and useful to student community.

18. Gardens
The college has beautiful gardens. The Dept. of Botany maintains a botanical
garden with a good collection of medicinal plants.

19. Bank
The College has Indian Bank building and ATM in its Campus.

20. Facilities
Research centre, Language Lab, Net centre, E-class room, seminar hall, Canteen,
Water Purifying plant, Generator, Solar system, UPS, Wi-Fi, INFLIBNET, coin box
and reprographic facilities have been provided to both the students and staff.
The college makes optimum use of its infrastructure. Regular classes are
held for backward students out of college hours. Government and Private agencies
utilize the college infrastructure facilities to conduct meetings, seminars, medical
camps and during cyclone times, the buildings are utilized for cyclone victims.

STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION
The students of the South Coastal region of Guntur district have taken maximum
advantage of the academic inputs and learning resources of our college. Our college
promotes all-round development of the students of this backward region by providing the
necessary facilities and involve them in all types of activities.

1. Passes and Drop-out rates


The Drop out rate of the P.G. students is nil. The performance of students in the University
examinations is good. as far as U.G. students are concerned the percentage is 58.The
dropout rate of UG students is 12.4%. To bring down the U.G. students drop-out rate, the
counseling wing will identify those students who are compelled to discontinue their studies.
Due to economic problems. the management provides financial aid to those who discontinue
due to academic and economic problems.
2. Progression to Employment and Future Studies
Though we have no official record of students taking examinations such as TOEFL, NET,
GATE, I.C.S., G.R.E., GMAT, etc., But, yearly 50 to 60 members are selected for police, army,
novel, air force, teacher, etc posts. According to general feedback from our Alumni reveals
that generations of the students graduated in our college have occupied high positions in
various walks of life and career such as education, engineering, politics, Law, medicine,
administration, business, etc., bringing glory to their Alma mater.

3. Alumni Association
The Alumni association of our college was formed on 5-3-1994. The alumni hold
prominent and respectable positions in the society. The old students gifted a building in
the name of Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao Old Students home to the college on 15-2-1995, a
measure of their gratitude to the institution. This association has also instituted cash prizes
for meritorious students. The old students of our college, Dr.D.Rambabu, Scientist, Sri
Panduranga Rao , Director, Infotech , Sri Syam Babu, C.I. of Police and many others came
all the way from Hyderabad and Bangalore and gave valuable suggestions to our students.
4. Prospectus and Calendar
Our College publishes annual prospectus giving details of courses, fee structure, brief
history of the college, addresses of the members of management committee, department
wise list of staff members, admission rules, rules of attendance and discipline , conduct,
examination system, list of scholarships and endowment prizes and journals and magazines
available in the library. An annual Calendar is issued to every student and it contains
working days, examination dates and holidays.
5. Financial Aid to Students
In order to promote higher education and motivate the talented students, the college
management has instituted merit and endowment scholarships on its own and also created
endowments through the support of Alumni and philanthropists. The students are provided
with different financial aid from the Central and State governments like National merit
scholarships, Hindi scholarships, merit scholarships, Social Welfare scholarships.

6. Career Counseling and guidance cell

There is a career counseling and guidance cell with the teachers as members and they
provide information about the employment opportunities and various competitive
examinations. They also invite eminent persons from industry and business to guide the
students on different aspects. The cell also encourages students to undertake self
employment schemes. Special coaching is provided by Physical Director, NCC for police, army,
novel, air force, teacher, etc selections. Yearly 50 to 60 persons are selected in above selections.

7. Feedback from students

Feedback from all the students is obtained and it helps the Principal and Management to
identify and suggest to some teachers to improve their quality of teaching and enhance student
supportive programs, etc.

8. Recreation and leisure time facilities

Our college provides many recreational and leisure time facilities like indoor outdoor
games, nature club, Photo club, readers club, internet, students magazine, audio-visual
facilities, cultural programmes, dance and music competitions, etc.

9. Co-curricular activities

a) Debate and Quiz Club


In order to bring out the creative skills of students the debating and quiz club
organizes a wide range of activities like Debating, Quiz, Elocution, Muchataga
Mudu Nimushalu , Fine Arts and Literary competitions. The students of our
college have bagged a number of awards in these activities of various levels. Our
college club also conducts Debating and Quiz competitions to the college students
of ANU area every year.

b) Associations
The literary , Science, Commerce and social sciences associations are very active
in our college. Lectures by eminent people are arranged on different topics.
These guest lectures helped the students to enhance their knowledge.

c) COHSSIP
Ours is the first college in Guntur district to implement the COHSSIP programme,
funded by U.G.C. .

10. Extra - Curricular activities

a) N.C.C.
Our NCC unit is old unit established in 1970. With an authorized strength of 60
cadets, our N.C.C. has brought many laurels to our college.

b) N.S.S.
Our College NSS unit is also equally active and service oriented. The present
student strength of NSS is 110.

c) N.G.C. & Eco CLUB


We have started NGC wing in our college. 125 students joined this wing. The
students actively participated in plantation, cleaning programs in the college
campus and surroundings of this village, etc.

d). Govt. Programmes


Our college staff and students actively participated in the Programmes sponsored
by the State Government. In 1997 our college got first place and won two lakhs prize
money in participating Janambhoomi programme by government of A.P.
ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT
1. Organizational Structure
The State Government and the Department of Collegiate Education propose the
Policies for the organization and management of the colleges. Our college is
managed officially by Dr. S.R.K Prasad, vice chairman well defined policies and
practices which are inherited from the founder Secretary and Correspondent, Dr.
N.V.Krishna Rao, who have set a glorious example in the governance of the
college.
2. Functionaries
The college functions under the administrative and academic leadership of the
Principal. In order to assist the Principal in monitoring various activities through out
the year, the college has 37 staff committees. The Principal and the coordinators of
various committees work in unison to keep up the discipline, efficiency and
productivity of the college both academically and administratively. The office
superintendent assists the Principal in assessing the performance of non-teaching
staff.
3. Finance Management
The annual budget of our college is always balanced and there is a regular internal
audit mechanism.

4. Grievance Redressal Cell
There is a grievance redressal cell in the college to consider the grievances of staff and
students and submit the same to the management for consideration.

5. Suggestion Box
Suggestion box is installed in the college at important places for the students to make use of it
to address their grievances.

6. Welfare Measures
Our College has a number of welfare programmes for its staff and students. These are :
Health checkup, Financial assistance, Loan facilities, Cash prizes and awards for
meritorious students, poor boys fund, internet facility etc.

7. Academic Calendar
An academic calendar committee is constituted for preparing the academic plan of every
year and the same is supplied to all the staff members for effective implementation.

8. Fee Structure
The state government and A.N.U. prescribes the fee structure for all aided sections.
The fee for the self financing courses for U.G. is fixed by the management on the
basis of the nature and type of course offered. For P.G. self finance courses, the
ANU prescribes the fee structure.

9. Human Power Requirement

The human power requirement of our college is in accordance with UGC and
State Government norms. Based on the work load, the management recruits the
teaching faculty and nonteaching staff.

10. Training and Performance appraisals of the Faculty

The faculty are freely encouraged to participate in FIPs, Workshops, Seminars


and Refresher courses. Teachers are evaluated through the self appraisal form
prescribed by the UGC. Besides, a feedback from student is obtained by the
Principal about the performance of teachers.

The internal system of our college runs on certain standards cherished in our
college emblem. The motto of the establishment of our college, indeed, is being
fulfilled by serving the poor, deprived and educationally backward sections of our
area. To meet our targets we have adopted the following practices.

1. Mechanism adopted for Internal quality checks


To monitor the academic affairs we have constituted an academic council with all
the Heads of the departments. The council meets every month to discuss academic
matters.

2. Stock Verification
The stock verification committees have been constituted for annual verification
of stock in all departments to give report.

3. Discipline
The discipline among the students on the college campus and the hostel premises
is well looked after by the Discipline Committee comprising senior lecturers.

4. Teacher - guardianship system


Batches of students are under the rigorous supervision of their class Lecturers
concerned throughout the academic year. They look after the welfare of the
students allotted.
5. Students Union
The unique feature of our college is its method of the formation of the students
union based on merit since the inception of the college in 1969.
6. Endowment Prizes
There are a number of endowment prizes to encourage the bright and brilliant
students by the elite.
7. Alumni
To gear up old students activities concerned with college development the Alumni
was established long back. Old students home is an illustrious contribution of
them.
8. Staff Quarters
The provision of staff quarters is an asset of our college in this rural atmosphere.
Lecturers are available for the students round the clock.

9. Hostels
We have both boys and girls hostels. Staff members regularly visit the
hostels during study hours and clarify their doubts.

10. Seminars by Experts


Considerable number of Seminars have been conducted by inviting renowned
subject experts. Students play a key role in such activities.

11. Personality Development


A pack of literary activities are conduct all the year round. Our college
encourages our student community to improve themselves. To organize
these activities Literary association has been constituted.

12. Fine Arts


The Fine Arts association functions to churn out the hidden skills of the
students in fine arts.

13. Remedial classes


Our college always provides remedial coaching during the zero hour i.e., 9 to
10 am and 5 to 6 pm for academically poor students.

The big and beautiful Library invites the visitors and all the inmates
to have the pleasure of reading thousands of books, INFLIBNET and
acquiring knowledge.

15. Computer Centre


Our Computer lab with multiple systems, Language Lab, E-Class room
and Wi-Fi facility is a good piece of information centre.

16. Museums
Our Zoology, Botany and History departments have well equipped
and well maintained museums.

17. Civic Responsibility


NCC, NSS & NGC cultivate the civic responsibility apart from academic
benefits.

18. Self Finance Courses


Introduction of self finance courses like B.Sc., Computers ,
Electronics, M.Sc. Chemistry is a welcome change to provide more
courses to our rural youth.

Our Lecturers are attentive in finding new areas of knowledge through
Seminars, Workshops , Refresher courses, Orientation programmes and FIPs
to impart the best education to the students.

20. Sports
We have got a big play ground and two more semi play grounds. To our
pride we have a massive indoor stadium. Our college is a place for University
level sports competitions.

Through the career guidance cell we pave the path to show the best
opportunities for the employment.

The college has linkage with a few national agencies for its academic
activities and research.

SUMMARY

Plans have been outlined for future infrastructure development. There are also plans to
further improvement of curricular and other facilities required for all the sections of the
people of south coast.

In this modern age of rigorous competition, the question remains about the modernization of
programmes, identification of emerging areas of demand as well as interest, rehabilitation
of absolute programmes and strengthening of already existing courses. For this, a
thorough professional guidance from an experienced National body like NAAC is
required.
