DETERMINERS
WHAT ARE DETERMINERS?
Determiners are used to identify things
A determiner is always followed by a noun

They are used in front of nouns to indicate

whether you are referring to something specific
or something of a particular type.
The definite and indefinite articles a/an/the are
all determiners
You use a specific determiner when people
know exactly which thing(s) or person/people
you are talking about.
ARTICLES
We use a / an before a noun when we talk
about one thing or person
Example: a banana (one banana)
an apple (one apple)
We use a before a consonant sound

Example: a boat
a big house
We use an before a vowel sound (a,e,i,o,u)

Examples:
An apple
An expensive car
ARTICLE THE
We use a/an with singular nouns to refer to
something but it is not clear which thing we
mean
Example: I want to watch a DVD (any DVD is ok
to me)
We use the with singular and plural noun when
we it is clear which thing or things we mean
Example: I want to watch the DVD of our
wedding
We dont use a/an with plural nouns
